Andrew Heaney Released
Andrew Heaney, who went through waivers unclaimed after the team designated him for assignment on Tuesday. Heaney joined the Pirates on a one-year, $5.25 million contract over the winter, and it looked like a wise investment for a few months. The 34-year-old owned a 3.33 ERA after his 14th start of the season on June 12, but the wheels began coming off after that. Heaney struggled enough over the ensuing several weeks that the Pirates demoted him to their bullpen earlier this month. In his final appearance with the Pirates, Heaney coughed up five earned runs in two-thirds of an inning in a 7-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 25. The journeyman threw 120 1/3 innings as a Pirate and went 5-10 with a 5.39 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP, and 84:39 K:BB.
