Nick Pivetta Impressing In Bid For Rotation Spot
4 years agoBoston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta, who is fighting for a rotation spot this spring, has impressed the team's coaching staff early in camp. The Red Sox acquired Pivetta from the Phillies last August in exchange for relievers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree. "He proved it last year in a small sample size. I do believe the ability is there, the pitchability is there, the stuff is there. Just let him be himself, go out and compete and see where it takes us," manager Alex Cora said. The 27-year-old right-hander made two starts for Boston last season and gave up just two earned runs with 13 strikeouts and five walks in his 10 innings of work. With Chris Sale (elbow) still recovering from Tommy John surgery, Pivetta has a chance to solidify the back end of the team's rotation to begin the 2021 campaign.
