Nestor Cortes Nearing Spring Debut
2 years agoNew York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) has resumed throwing from a mound, including against live competition on Feb. 23, and he has been running at around 90 percent intensity. Manager Aaron Boone said that Cortes will likely throw one more live batting practice session before making his Grapefruit League debut in camp. A Grade 2 right hamstring strain forced Cortes to drop out of this year's World Baseball Classic, but he still has a chance to be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback. The 28-year-old was a first-time All-Star for the Yankees in 2022. He doesn't blow hitters away with velocity, but he keeps hitters off balance with different arm angles from the left side and should be a key contributor in New York's rotation again this year behind aces Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon.
