Gleyber Torres 2020 Outlook: Huge Upside Comes With A High-Price Tag
5 years agoGleyber Torres had a monster 2019 justifying the Yankees' decision to trade for the top-prospect during the 2016 season. The budding superstar slashed .278/.337/.535 while blasting 38 home runs with 90 RBI and 96 runs scored. Torres backed up those strong numbers by finishing above MLB average in hard-hit percentage (35.8%), barrel rate (10.1), and average exit velocity (89 MPH) while improving his strikeout rate by almost four percent over his rookie year. As impressive as Torres has been, he was the beneficiary of a 21.5 percent HR/FB rate. Playing half his games in homer-happy Yankee Stadium will inflate that number a bit, but some regression should be expected, at least in the home run department. Even if he hits a few less long balls, Torres should be in line for another big season as he continues his career ascent. He'll bat in the middle of a stacked Yankees lineup in a top-5 hitters park. Torres can comfortably be projected to hit another 30-35 homers this season and approach 100 runs and RBI. Torres is one of the rising stars in this game, but his massive upside is baked into his draft cost going around 25th overall. The decision to draft Torres comes down to chasing the massive upside of the 23-year-old in the hopes he has another level we've not yet seen from him at the Big League level.
