Denard Span Expected to Play Left Field For Mariners
7 years agoSeattle Mariners general manager Jerry DiPoto announced that Denard Span is expected to regularly start in left-field going forward. Span was just acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay and is experiencing a renaissance season in 2018. Over the course of 43 games, Span has accumulated 27 runs, four home runs, 28 RBI and six steals while batting lead-off for a Tampa Bay lineup that lacks much talent. The key factor driving Span's success has been his increased plate discipline. His 16.2% walk rate is double that of his career average. The veteran outfielder now transitions to a Mariners offense that desperately needed a left-handed bat. Span's presence could jumpstart the season for a slumping hitter like Nelson Cruz and get the Mariners going again after the losses of Robinson Cano and Dee Gordon.
