Euro 2024 Fantasy Preview: Matchday 3 Tips and Top Captaincy Picks

Soccer - Euro 2024, fantasy preview

The FPL Manual shares insights on the best Euro fantasy tips, top captaincy picks and recommended players ahead of Matchday 3.

An exciting Spain team defeated their group adversary Italy, with youngsters Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams earning great praise for their wide attacking threat. Germany, the host nation, earned six points in Group A and advanced to the next round. Matchday 2 was full of exhilarating moments, with Albania and Denmark who earned a draw against group favorites Croatia and England, respectively.

RotoBaller remains your favorite outlet for the best fantasy news worldwide and continues to dive into UEFA Euro 2024. In this article, we will look at the top fantasy tips to consider, as well as provide insights using statistics and metrics on what to expect ahead of the upcoming fixtures for Matchday 3.

Approaching the final game in the group stage of UEFA Euro 2024. Join me, the FPL Manual, as we analyze the top captaincy picks, best tips for your fantasy team, and recommended players to keep an eye out for in the next round.

Matchday 3 Euro Fantasy Tips

Invest in Portugal, France, and England Attacks

It's been strongly recommended that Euro fantasy managers target attacking assets from Portugal, France, or England. Projections for Matchday 3 indicate Portugal is anticipated to score 2.65 expected goals (xG), followed by France at 2.15 xG and England at 2.00 xG.

All three teams are aiming to be the group winners in their respective groups. The selected teams' projected clean sheet odds for Matchday 3 are 50%, 44%, and 52%, respectively.

Keep An Eye Out for Group E Fantasy Assets

The plot thickens in Group E, with a strong likelihood that all four nations—Belgium, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Romania—could end up with 3 points each by the end of Matchday 2. This scenario would make the final game in Group E a decisive showdown for all sides, leaving little room for squad rotation.

Recommended players to target within Group E include Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku of Belgium, Mykhailo Mudryk and Oleksandr Zinchenko of Ukraine, Ivan Schranz of Slovakia, and Nicolae Stanciu and Dennis Man of Romania.

Target Long-Range Shooters

A cracking finish from Nicolae Stanciu of Romania against Ukraine, a stunning strike from Arda Guler of Türkiye against Georgia in Matchday 1, and Morten Hjulmand’s wonder goal against England in Matchday 2 have all highlighted UEFA Euro 2024’s trend of scoring from outside the box.

Euro Fantasy managers should note that players who score from outside the box earn an additional point. To stand out from the crowd, consider selecting players known for their long-range shots. My personal favorite for Matchday 3 is Scott McTominay of Scotland, who accumulated four shots in the previous game against Switzerland.

Is It Time to Play my Wildcard or Limitless Chip?

With only 36 hours for each team to prepare for the next game, already qualified nations like Spain and Germany might opt to bring in fresher legs and rest key players for the knockout stages.

On another note, France struggled without Kylian Mbappe against the Netherlands in Matchday 2, ending a run of 50 UEFA Euro consecutive games without a goalless draw. This leaves many fantasy managers wondering: Should I play my Wildcard or Limitless chip for Matchday 3? And who are the best players to bring in for the final game?

The answer to that question is heavily contingent on the assets you cannot afford to lose from your squad; in other words, it is team-dependent. As previously stated, if your fantasy team is in a situation where squad rotations could influence your selection, it may be time to activate any of the available chips.

It is vital to recall the drama that will unfold in Groups C, D, and E, where great nations such as England, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Belgium, and Ukraine will all be vying for a spot in the Round of 16 and this would be the area you target with your Wildcard or Limitless chip.

Matchday 3 Top Captain Picks

The third gameweek of Euro 2024 offers a diverse set of enticing captaincy choices to set from. Players like Hungary's captain Dominik Szoboszlai against Scotland and experienced Croatian forward Andrej Kramarić taking on Italy make a strong case for the armband. However, my top two picks are:

Jamal Musiala (€8.5m) - Germany

Nicknamed "Bambi" for his innate dribbling ability, Jamal Musiala added a second goal to his tally in the game against Hungary, helping Germany advance to the next round. Musiala has played 25 minutes more than his attacking teammates, Kai Havertz and Florian Wirtz.

If manager Julian Nagelsmann decides to make a few rotations, the 21-year-old German forward could be favored to start the final game against Switzerland and strive to become the competition's top goal scorer.

Harry Kane (€11m) - England

Amidst complaints about Gareth Southgate's tactics and style of play for the Three Lions, it was the England captain Harry Kane who put them in front against Denmark in Matchday 2, bringing his goal tally to five goals scored at the UEFA Euro contest.

Kane became the third player to score in four separate major tournaments for England (2018 World Cup, EURO 2020, 2022 World Cup, EURO 2024), following in the footsteps of Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. The 2024 Golden Boot award winner will be vying to score against group underdogs Slovenia and help England finish as Group C winners.

Although Kylian Mbappe is highly projected to score, the French captain's name was omitted from the top captaincy picks as it's still uncertain if he will start against Poland in Matchday 3. However, if the gaffer deems him ready, he is still worth giving the armband.

Euro Fantasy managers have the ability to change captains on a daily basis during each gameweek, allowing us to have a wider range of options on any given day. Feel free to select any other enticing captain that was not mentioned above.

Differential Captain Pick (<10% ownership)

Christian Eriksen (€7m) - Denmark

The Danish midfield maestro is having a stellar performance in Euro 2024, proving to be a creative force for his nation. Leading the table for most chances created in the tournament, he will be crucial in helping the Danes secure their first group win against Serbia and qualify for the next round.

Currently owned by only 4% of managers, Christian Eriksen is the ultimate differential captaincy choice for the upcoming weekend.
