Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Seattle Mariners Claiming Relief Pitcher Dominic Leone Off Waivers

The Seattle Mariners have claimed relief pitcher Dominic Leone off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. The Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish reported the news in a tweet on Thursday morning.

The Mariners later announced the move in a tweet from the club's official Twitter account:

The 31-year-old has split the year between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels, pitching to a 4.74 ERA and a 5.37 FIP in 42 appearances spanning 43.2 innings of work. The veteran has also added a pitcher win, a save, and three holds on the season.

And while the reliever’s run-prevention numbers aren’t ideal, he has missed plenty of bats. Leone’s 33.3% whiff rate and 33.8% chase rate both rank in the 91st percentile league-wide.

Overall, he’s logged 44 strikeouts and 20 walks this season, good for 9.07 strikeouts and 4.12 walks allowed per nine innings. The reliever’s primary bat-missing offering this season has been a slider that’s sporting a 48.2% whiff rate this season.

Dominic Leone Whiff Rate And Usage Rate By Pitch This Season:

  • Four-Seamer: 25.5% whiff rate, 39.1% usage rate
  • Cutter: 27.6% whiff rate, 32.9% usage rate
  • Slider: 48.2% whiff rate, 28.0% usage rate

He’ll join a Mariners bullpen that includes established late-inning options, Andres Munoz and Matt Brash, so there might not be much in the way of save opportunities for Leone in Seattle. Still, he could be worth a look for fantasy managers in deeper leagues where holds are part of the scoring given his ability to miss bats at a high rate.
