RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - Waste Management Phoenix Open

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the Waste Management Open. Here are some under the radar plays and picks for this week's event.

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for a third season.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - WMPO

Joe Nicely - Daniel Berger

Alternate - Max Homa

A nice T2 result from Tony Finau last week at Torrey puts me in great early position in this contest. Unfortunately, my man Spencer also had Finau and is already sitting on an OAD total of nearly $1 million! So even though I'm off to a solid start through three events, I still have lots of work to do. Game on, Aguiar!

We head to TPC Scottsdale this week for the WMPO, an event that's always tons of fun. We've seen both "bombers" and "ball strikers" take down this event and I don't think you can go wrong with either style of player this week, but last year's winner Webb Simpson (I'm saving Webb for later) and former WMPO champion Rickie Fowler tell me that we might need to target "swiss army knife" players that have every tool in their toolbox.

This is actually a really juicy field that's full of elite options like Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, and Justin Thomas. However, my guy Daniel Berger allows me to save those players and also fits the bill of what I'm looking for this week perfectly. Berger never blows us away in a specific statistical category, but he's both concrete solid in all facets of the game and tough as nails mentally. He's posted top-10 finishes in half of his six career starts at the WMPO and top-10s in each of his two 2021 starts. I believe that's his floor this week and Berger also brings tournament-winning upside to the table.

Spencer Aguiar - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Hideki Matsuyama

Is going with Xander Schauffele in the fourth tournament of the year the correct move? We will have to see. But my plan is to be ultra-aggressive in this contest. The conservative route of saving players has never worked for me in the past, and I am going to fire freely whenever I see fit.

The tricky part about using Xander here is that his style does correlate to just about any track in the world. Taking a player of that stature off your books this early is a dangerous game to play, but I didn't necessarily have a major in mind for him when trying to figure out what I would be saving him for if I bypassed choosing him in Arizona. Sure, he could win an event like the U.S. Open, but a similar sentiment could be said about a handful of other golfers that will possess just about the same win equity at the end of the day.

Schauffele brings a sustained level of excellence with him to the event this week, posting 14 consecutive top-25 finishes, and his five top-fives in the past seven tournaments should give us a golfer peaking with his game. Everything is clicking for the fourth-ranked player in the world to end his two-year title drought, and I am hoping to find gold buried in the deserts of TPC Scottsdale to add to my OAD total.

Josh Bennett - Hideki Matsuyama

Alternate - Jon Rahm

We’re off to a real hot start this season so far. One week late on Reed and missed with Bubba on a "Bubba track". Watson gets another one this week that I now wish I had him for, so I’m sure a top-five finish is incoming.

Instead, I’m going with one of the other 15 golfers with extremely good course history here in Hideki. There are a lot of good names to choose from that are more towards the top of the rankings, but I’m hoping to save those guys for some of the more elite events and majors. Plus, I am not sure there is a course that suits Hideki better than this one, and he’s proved that with a couple wins, some other top-five finishes, and most recently two top-20 finishes in 2019 & '20. What he does well is obviously a good fit here. He has length off the tee to shorten some of these longer holes and he is in the elite of the elite in approach play, especially from longer distances. What he does badly is also mitigated a little bit here. The greens are large, so everyone is likely to have some issues putting like he does. The greens are also lightning fast, which should be helpful for him as all he has to do is get the ball on it’s start line and it should go where he wants it. Hoping Hideki can get me back on track this week!

Yearly Earnings - $34,577

Yearly Cuts Made - 1/3

Andrew Putters - Daniel Berger

Alternate - Will Zalatoris

I'm not really going out on a limb with this week's selection, but here we go. Daniel Berger is a great, not good, long-iron player, a skill that will come in handy this week at TPC Scottsdale. He also routinely takes advantage of normal scoring holes like Par-5s and short Par-4s. Berger has had three top-10s over his last six starts at the WMPO. This week's course reminds me a bit of TPC Southwind in Memphis, where Berger has logged two PGA Tour victories. I know that he'll be a popular option this week, but that is not enough to keep me from pulling the trigger on him in this spot.
