ANALYSIS: Trevor May has pitched less than five innings since the September 2016, yet he has a legitimate shot to earn some saves in Minnesota. The Twins have been without a true closer after trading veteran Fernando Rodney to the A's earlier this week. Trevor Hildenberger was the first to step up Saturday against Detroit. He promptly allowed two runs but ended up with his first save of the season. Recent outings have not been kind to Hildenberger as he has allowed multiple runs in four straight starts. His 4.74 ERA is not as bad as it seems given that his xFIP and SIERA are both below four. He may just be getting unlucky. Regardless, if he continues this downward trend, he will likely be out of this role.

Backup option Addison Reed is not pretty either. Reed owns a higher WHIP and exactly similar ERA as Hildenberger. His xFIP and SIERA are both in the fours which suggests that if he does attain the ninth-inning role, it likely won't be for long, despite having closed out games in the past.

May is a bit of a lottery ticket since he has only been pitching since July 31. However, his performances have shown nothing but promise. He has only allowed one run on five hits through four and two-thirds innings since being activated. He has struck out seven and walked none in that timespan and should he continue this pace; he could find himself closing out games by September.
