Week 9 of the NHL season is in the books, and the standings are taking shape, which means it's time to update our power rankings. The holiday break is quickly approaching, and the playoff contenders are finally starting to solidify their placement in the standings.
This week, we saw the New Jersey Devils take a massive step back in our rankings after dropping all four games, while the New York Islanders picked up some impressive victories and are surging in the Eastern Conference.
All statistics and team records mentioned are updated as of Monday, December 8. Who were the biggest risers and fallers from this past week? Let's dive in!
No. 32 - Vancouver Canucks
We have a new No. 32 on our list. After losing their final two games last week, their losing streak continued in Week 9, dropping their first two games to the Avalanche and the Mammoth. While they bounced back on Saturday with a surprise upset victory over the Wild, this team is trending in the wrong direction and appears poised for a massive rebuild.
Given their placement in the standings, they could look to listen to offers on superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes ahead of the trade deadline. They have won just three games over their last 10 and enter Week 10 with -19 GD.
No. 31 - Calgary Flames
While they began their week with a tough 5-1 loss to the Predators, the Flames won both of their last two games, bringing their record to 11-15-4. On Thursday, they upset the surging Minnesota Wild (4-1) and then took down the Mammoth (2-0) on Saturday.
During their victory over the Wild, 23-year-old winger Matthew Coronato was able to snap a four-game point drought as he found the back of the net and added an assist. Through the 22 games, he has been a bright spot of the offense, tallying 16 points (nine goals)
No. 30- Nashville Predators
The Predators opened the week with two impressive victories, which pushed them out of the bottom spot on our rankings. On Tuesday, they took down the struggling Flames (5-2) and continued this momentum into their trip to Florida, where they took down the Panthers in overtime (2-1).
Their week ended with a regulation loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday. While they enter the week with the fewest points in the league, they have begun to show progress over their last 10 games, carrying a 5-5 record, which puts them in the No. 30 spot on our ranking.
No. 29 - Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres entered the new week off a shootout victory over the Wild and continued to find their footing with a dominating 5-1 victory over the Jets on Monday evening. In this game, Josh Norris led the way, netting two goals. However, their road trip has gotten off to a rough start, as they dropped Wednesday's game in Philadelphia and then fell to the Jets, this time in Western Canada.
They will open Week 10 with four games out west before returning home on December 18. Their 26 points (11-13-4) remain their lowest in the Eastern Conference.
No. 28 - St. Louis Blues
The Blues took a bit of a step forward in our power rankings last week, but quickly regressed to open Week 9. They dropped their first two games of the week in regulation to the Anaheim Ducks and the Boston Bruins. However, they got back in the win column over the weekend, taking down the Senators and the Canadiens on Saturday and Sunday.
Over their last 10 games, they have posted a solid 5-3-2 record and are beginning to show some life as they enter Week 10 with an 11-12-7 overall record.
No. 27 - Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks won just one game last week and had a similar showing in Week 9. They began their week with a shutout loss to the Golden Knights and then were able to take down the Kings in a 2-1 victory on Thursday. In this game, Spencer Knight led the way, stopping 26 of the 27 shots he saw.
However, their momentum was quickly stalled as this same Kings team dismantled them 6-0 on Saturday. They saw a similar result on Sunday, falling 7-1 to the Ducks in California. Their 2-6-2 record over the last 10 and a rough -12 GD this week continues to sink them in our rankings.
No. 26 - Winnipeg Jets
The Jets had a busy four-game slate this week, but were unable to make much of a jump in the standings. The Jets dropped their first two games of the week, but were able to escape with a loser point in their shootout loss to the Canadiens. While they got back in the win column on Friday over the Sabres, they quickly regressed, falling 6-2 to the Oilers on Saturday.
The Jets have been one of the worst teams in the league over the past two weeks, holding an uninspiring 3-6-1 record over their last 10 games. Eric Comrie has struggled covering the starter's crease, holding a rough 3.64 GAA and a .896% SV% over his last four. With Connor Hellebuyck (knee) still on the shelf, do not expect this team to find its early-season form anytime soon.
No. 25 - Seattle Kraken
One of our biggest fallers this week is the Seattle Kraken. After entering Week 10 on a three-game losing streak, they saw these struggles continue, as they dropped both of their games in regulation. They fell 9-4 ot the Oilers on Thursday and then lost a close 4-3 game to the Red Wings on Saturday.
As noted before, the Seattle offense continues to hold this club back. They are the only team in the NHL that has yet to score 70 goals. In addition, their five-game losing streak is tied for the worst in the league with the Devils.
No. 24 - Ottawa Senators
The Senators' inconsistent stretch continued this past week. While they opened their week with a crucial 5-2 victory over the Canadiens, they quickly lost ground in the standings, falling to the Rangers (5-2) and then taking a tough 2-1 loss to the Blues on Saturday.
Since returning from injury, Brady Tkachuk has immediately made an immense impact for this team, totaling four points, with 21 shots on goal and 16 hits through his first five games.
No. 23 - Florida Panthers
The Panthers entered the week on a two-game losing streak, and their struggles continued. They took a 4-1 loss to the Maple Leafs on Tuesday and then fell to the Predators (2-1) in overtime on Thursday. However, on the weekend, they picked up two straight victories, with a thrilling 7-6 win over the Blue Jackets and a 4-1 defeat over the Islanders, who entered this game as one of the hottest teams in the sport.
While injuries have hindered this team, they currently sit with a modest 14-12-2 record. While they have the talent on the roster to push for a second-half surge, they dug themselves a large hole that will be very difficult to climb out of. Forward Carter Verhaeghe enters Week 10 on a three-game goal streak (four total goals) and is providing a massive spark to this club as we approach the holiday break.

No. 22 - Utah Mammoth
The Mammoth had a four-game slate this week and did not move much in our rankings after a 2-2 showing. They opened the week with a loss to the Sharks but bounced back in a big way, taking down the Ducks by a 7-0 score. Their other victory came on Friday against a stumbling Canucks (4-1). Their week ended with a 2-0 shutout loss to the Flames.
Over their last 10, the Mammoth have posted a modest 4-6 record and enter Week 10 with an overall 14-13-3 record. Their offense has led the way, scoring an impressive 91 goals, placing them in the top-10 in the sport.
No. 21 - Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs began to show some life last Saturday when they dismantled the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena by a 7-2 score. Fortunately, this team continued to find its footing, picking up victories in each of its first two games of the week and ending the week with a shootout loss.
Their victories over two Eastern teams, the Panthers and the Hurricanes, provided a nice boost in the standings. They enter Week 10 with a 13-11-4 record, but their 5-3-2 record over their last 10 suggests they may be crawling out of their early-season hole. A big reason for their recent turnaround is Auston Matthews, who has scored two goals and added three helpers over his last five.
No. 20 - San Jose Sharks
After a hot start to the season, the Sharks have been unable to rekindle that same production. They began Week 9 with a 6-3 victory over the Mammoth, but then dropped their next two games in regulation to the Capitals (7-1) and the Stars (4-1). On Sunday, they bounced back with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Hurricanes in Carolina.
Macklin Celebrini led the way in Sunday's upset, tallying three points (one goal). He enters Week 10 with a stellar 43 points through the first 30 games of the campaign.
No. 19 - Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings entered this week on a four-game losing streak and appeared to be facing some expected regression. However, they rebounded well this week and continued to hold their ground in the middle of the Eastern Conference. On Tuesday, they took down the Bruins (5-4) and were able to tally a loser point in their shootout loss to the Blue Jackets.
They concluded their week with a 4-3 victory over the Kraken. While their 4-4-2 record over their last 10 is not overly promising, they took a massive step forward this week. They will look to stay hot in the remainder of their western road trip this upcoming week, beginning with a favorable matchup in Vancouver on Monday night.
No. 18 - Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets continued to stack up points this week and hold their ground in the competitive Metropolitan Division. After entering Week 9 on a two-game overtime-loss streak, the Blue Jackets were able to flip the script, picking up two straight victories over the Devils and Red Wings. Then on Saturday, they picked up another point in their overtime loss to the Panthers.
However, on Sunday, their point streak came to an end as they fell to the Capitals (2-0) in D.C. Defenseman Zach Werenski saw his five-game point streak come to an end in this loss as well. During his point streak, the 27-year-old scored two goals and added seven helpers.
No. 17 - Edmonton Oilers
Their week opened with a tough 1-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild courtesy of a 33-save shutout by breakout goaltender Jesper Wallstedt, which has become a common result for many teams this season. However, the Oilers rebounded well and picked up four points over their last two games. On Thursday, they took down the Kraken (9-4) and would put six pucks in the back of the net en route to taking down the Jets on Saturday.
Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid both led the way in these victories, combining for a hefty 12 points. If these two superstar forwards continue to maintain this scoring pace, expect the Oilers to quickly gain ground in the playoff race.
No. 16 - Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens began their week with a tough 5-2 loss to the Senators but rebounded well, picking up all four points in their next two games against the Jets and Maple Leafs. On Sunday, they got back in the loss column, falling to the Blues (4-3) on their home ice.
Despite sitting in the top half of the standings, their -7 GD is quite alarming and suggests even more regression is expected. They are the only team within the top-15 in the overall standings that has a negative goal differential. Netminders Sam Montembeault and Jakub Dobes have struggled recently and have played a role in the team's inconsistent play over the past several weeks.
Montembeault has held a high 3.86 GAA over his last six games, while Dobes has posted a 3.40 GAA over his last four games.
No. 15 - Los Angeles Kings
The Kings suffered two regulation losses to begin their week but ended with a dominant 6-0 victory over the Blackhawks on Saturday evening, getting themselves back on track. Overall, they hold a 13-8-7 record with a +1 GD. Their 33 points put them just below the average mark in the sport and third place in the Pacific Division.
However, while they sit near the middle of the pack, they have been among the sport's top teams on the road, entering Week 10 with a 9-2-4 record. The offence will need Kevin Fiala to find his shot, as he has scored just one goal over his last 10 games, yet he still leads the entire club in goals this season.
No. 14 - New York Rangers
The Rangers took a step forward in our rankings last week and continued on a similar trajectory this week. After ending last week with a tough regulation loss to the Lightning, they rebounded very well, picking up two straight victories. On Tuesday, they took down the red-hot Dallas Stars in overtime and then defeated the Senators (4-2) in regulation.
While they fell to the Avalanche in overtime on Saturday, this was a critical point to pick up against the top team in the league. On Sunday, they picked up another massive overtime loser point in their math cup against the Golden Knights. The Rangers picked up six out of eight points this week and now sit just outside of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference.
The Mike Sullivan system is beginning to take shape in the Big Apple.
No. 13 - Boston Bruins
After taking a 5-4 loss to the Red Wings to begin their week, the Bruins rebounded well, picking up all four possible points over their last two games. On Thursday, they took down St. Louis (5-2) and then concluded their week with a spectacular 4-1 victory over the free-falling New Jersey Devils.
Morgan Geekie has been the league's most prolific scorer over the last month and has continued to stay hot, sparking this offense. Over his last nine games, Geekie has found the back of the net an eye-catching 10 times and added four helpers.

No. 12 - New Jersey Devils
The Devils ended last week with a loss to the Flyers and saw these struggles reach a new low in Week 9. The Devils dropped all four games in regulation and are taking a massive dip in the Eastern Conference. After scoring three goals in their loss to the L.A. Kings on Monday, the Devils' offense was shut down, as they scored just one total goal on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday during their losses to the Stars, Golden Knights, and Bruins.
With Jack Hughes (wrist) on the shelf, the offense will need a spark. In net, Jakob Markstrom has not been able to save the struggling offense, as he has posted a high 3.32 GAA over his last six games. Despite their disappointing start, they still sit in the top half, given their dominant start. However, another rough week will push them down significantly.
No. 11 - Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers entered Week 9 on an impressive three-game winning streak and opened their new week with a critical divisional game against the Penguins. Unfortunately, the Flyers ' hot streak came to an end at the hands of Sidney Crosby and the company, but they were able to bounce back on Wednesday, when they took down the Sabres.
On Sunday, they took a tough 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in regulation. Despite the underwhelming week, the Flyers still boast a strong 15-9-3 record and remain one of the biggest surprises of the season's first half.
No. 10 - Tampa Bay Lightning
After being one of the biggest risers last week, the Lightning were due for a step back. However, the Lightning surprisingly dropped all three games in regulation, bringing their record to 16-10-2. Two of these games came against the Islanders, and their other loss came at the hands of the Penguins on Tuesday evening, in a tough 4-3 loss.
Despite the poor showing, the Lightning still sit near the top of our rankings and enter Week 10 with 34 points, placing them near the top of the Eastern Conference. Their stellar +15 GD is tied for the fourth-best in the sport. Expect the Lightning to bounce back in their matchup against the Leafs on Monday night.
No. 9 - Pittsburgh Penguins
After a rough 7-2 loss to cap off Week 8, the Penguins were trending in the wrong direction. However, they were able to pick up two massive victories to open the week, taking down the Flyers and the Lightning in regulation. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin led the way in both victories, combining for four goals and three helpers.
On Sunday, they saw their win streak come to an end as they fell to the Stars in a shootout loss. Since returning from injury on November 26, netminder Tristan Jarry has posted an elite 2.47 GAA with a .915% SV% over six outings. If Jarry can return to his former All-Star level of play, the Penguins can remain a legit playoff contender.
No. 8 - Vegas Golden Knights
After taking a few disappointing losses last week, the Golden Knights quickly found their footing this week and surged in the Western Conference standings. They began Week 9 with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Blackhawks and then proceeded to shut out the struggling Devils (3-0) on Friday. On Sunday, they stayed hot, taking down the surging Rangers at MSG (3-2).
This was a massive week for the Knights, especially after entering this week in a bit of a slump, dropping four of their last five. This four-game winning streak brings their record to 14-6-8, placing them sixth in the entire sport.
No. 7 - New York Islanders
The Islanders picked up some very impressive victories this week and should be viewed as a real contender in the Eastern Conference. On Tuesday, they took down the Lightning (2-1) in Belmont and carried that momentum into a massive victory on Thursday, handing the Avalanche their second regulation loss.
Then on Saturday, they marched into Tampa Bay and shut out the Lightning (2-0), but saw their dominant streak come to an end on Sunday when they fell to the Panthers 4-1. Despite a loss on Sunday, the Islanders sit with a 16-11-3 record, good for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Their victories over the top team in the league and two over the Lightning earned them a massive boost in our rankings.
No. 6 - Minnesota Wild
The Wild continued to roll to begin Week 9, topping the surging Oilers with a 1-0 victory. However, their week ended with two very disappointing losses against two of the worst teams in the sport. On Thursday, they fell 4-1 to the Flames and then concluded their week with a 4-2 loss to the Canucks.
While these two losses dropped them in our power rankings, they have remained one of the best teams since the middle of November. Over the last 10, they hold a strong 7-2-1 record. Expect them to bounce back on Monday with a match against the struggling Kraken. Wallstedt remains the story of this club and has been an MVP candidate through the opening quarter-mark. The former 20th overall pick is enjoying a massive breakout season entering Week 10 with a 1.95 GAA and a .936% SV%. He is a legit Vezina contender.
No. 5 - Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks ended Week 8 with a disappointing loss to the Blackhawks but quickly rebounded in Week 9, starting with a 4-1 victory over the Blues. In this game, Leo Carlsson netted his 14th goal and tallied his 36th point of the campaign. However, they regressed in a big way, falling to the Mammoth (7-0) on Wednesday.
Despite the embarrassing loss, they were able to slow the red-hot Capitals with a shootout victory on Friday and ended their week with a massive 7-1 victory over the Blackhawks on Sunday, getting back on track. They enter Week 10 with 37 points, the fourth-most in the sport.
No. 4 - Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes began their week with a surprising 5-1 loss to the Maple Leafs but wasted little time getting back in the win column, taking down the Predators (6-2) on Saturday. However, they suffered a tough loss to the Sharks on Sunday (4-1) on their home ice, which brings them to a 17-9-2 record.
Despite holding a very underwhelming 5-4-1 record over their last 10, they still sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division and second in the Eastern Conference, only trailing the Capitals.
No. 3 - Washington Capitals
The Capitals were one of our biggest risers last week and continued to return to their 2024 form. They began their week with two straight victories, defeating the Kings and Sharks on the West Coast by demanding 3-1 and 7-1 scores. While their six-game winning streak was snapped by the Ducks on Friday, they wasted little time kick-starting a new one, as they shut out the Blue Jackets (2-0) on Sunday.
They hold a dominant 8-1-1 record over their last 10 and Week 10, sitting as the clear top team in the Eastern Conference. Goaltender Logan Thompson has yet to slow down, posting an incredible .925% SV% with a 1.96 GAA and a 21-13-6 record through 28 outings.
No. 2- Dallas Stars
The Stars saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a tough overtime loss to the Rangers on Tuesday, but they quickly regained their form. On Wednesday and Friday, they took care of business against the Senators and the Sharks, with both victories coming in regulation. On Sunday, they continued to roll, taking down the Penguins in a shootout victory.
Wyatt Johnston has enjoyed a stellar start to the season, serving as the team's top center. Over his last eight games, Johnston has scored five goals and added eight helpers. He is on pace to enjoy his first season averaging over a point per game.
No. 1 - Colorado Avalanche
Is this much of a surprise? The Avalanche continues to sit in our No. 1 spot and has shown no signs of ever falling out of it. This week, they took their second regulation loss of the season (at the hands of the Islanders), but took care of business in their other three game, picking up all six possible points.
Nathan MacKinnon continues to light up the score sheet, having tallied seven goals and five helpers over his last six games.
