Week 2 Running Back Rankings Outlooks

Jaydon Blue, Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue is expected to remain inactive during their Week 2 contest against the New York Giants. Blue was a healthy scratch during their season opener against the Eagles, and it appears the fifth-round rookie is expected to spend the second game on the sidelines as well. During training camp, Blue was competing for a role alongside veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. In their Week 1 loss to the Eagles, Williams found the back of the end zone twice and tallied 54 yards on the ground and added 10 through the air.

Sanders operated as a change-of-pace option and totaled 50 yards from scrimmage with a fumble. Fantasy managers should expect Williams to take the lion's share of opportunities once again, making him a high-floor RB2 facing the Giants.

Jordan Mason, Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings running back Jordan Mason was very involved in his Vikings' debut, playing 54% of snaps and leading the team with 15 carries. He turned those carries into 68 rushing yards and converted his only target into a seven-yard reception. Mason didn't find the end zone, while his backfield-mate Aaron Jones Sr. scored on a key catch in the fourth quarter. Mason and Jones split the playing time just about evenly, although Jones' touchdown made him the better fantasy performer in Week 1.

Both will be viable flex plays in Week 2 against the Falcons on Sunday Night Football. J.J. McCarthy ran the offense well enough that both running backs will have touchdown-dependent RB2 upside against Atlanta.

Bhayshul Tuten, Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Bhayshul Tuten is expected to handle increased opportunities going forward after the team traded Tank Bigsby to the Philadelphia Eagles. Tuten only rushed three times for 11 yards in Week 1, but he should earn more carries as he goes from No. 3 to No. 2 on the depth chart.

The larger role is enough to justify keeping tabs on Tuten in fantasy football, but he's not a fantasy starter quite yet. Travis Etienne Jr. asserted himself as the Jaguars' only fantasy-relevant running back on Sunday as he totaled 156 scrimmage yards. For now, Tuten, a rookie, should be left on the bench in dynasty and redraft leagues.

Austin Ekeler, Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler (shoulder) is on the initial injury report for Week 2 and was listed as limited on the team's estimated injury report for Monday. The Commanders conducted a walk-through practice. While Ekeler's status should be followed heading into Thursday night's tilt against the Green Bay Packers, he should be able to suit up in Week 2.

The 30-year-old played on only 33 of the team's 70 offensive snaps in their Week 1 win over the New York Giants while carrying the ball six times for 26 yards and catching all three of his targets for 31 yards as a pass-catcher. Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt led the team's RBs with 10 carries and had a team-high 82 rushing yards and a touchdown. JCM already looks like the leader on early downs in Washington, leaving Ekeler as the Commanders' primary pass-catching back in a committee.

Najee Harris, Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said that the team planned to give running back Najee Harris 12 to 15 plays in the Week 1 season opener last Friday in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs and capped him at 12. However, Harbaugh said Harris' workload could change in a Week 2 divisional clash on Monday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. Harris was only on the field for 12 plays last Friday in the 27-21 win, but managed just one carry for five yards while catching his only target for another five-yard pickup.

Meanwhile, first-round rookie Omarion Hampton led the Bolts' backfield with 15 carries for 48 yards (3.2 yards per tote) while adding two catches for 13 yards. Harris missed almost all of training camp and the entire preseason with an eye injury, which is why L.A. eased him in. While he could see the field more in Week 2, he still won't be much more than a shaky RB3/flex in fantasy.
