Will Cam Skattebo be healthy enough to play in Week 1 for the New York Giants? Don Fanelli breaks down the latest Cam Skattebo injury news for fantasy football.
New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo has returned to the field, sparking optimism for both the team and fantasy managers. The fourth-round pick from Arizona State came back to training camp practice on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, after missing time due to a nagging hamstring injury. His comeback is a key step towards earning a significant role in a crowded backfield.
Skattebo's absence during the first two preseason games was a setback, but his re-entry into team drills is encouraging and suggests he may be ready for Week 1. Although he still needs to earn the coaching staff's trust after missing valuable practice, his return to full participation indicates he's close to full health and prepared to compete for a spot in the Giants' running back rotation.
The Giants' backfield is an interesting situation, with Cam Skattebo competing against veteran Devin Singletary and second-year starter Tyrone Tracy Jr. for touches. While Tracy is currently listed as the RB1 on the depth chart, Skattebo has a clear path to becoming the team's RB2, and possibly the RB1 later in the season. This role could provide significant fantasy upside as a versatile weapon in the offense.

Will Cam Skattebo Play In Week 1?
Fortunately, Skattebo participated in team drills on Tuesday, marking a significant step forward in his recovery from a challenging soft-tissue injury and improving his availability for Week 1. This update was first reported by Art Stapleton of northjersey.com, who highlighted the rookie's progress despite his absence from the initial preseason games. Skattebo's return to the field alleviates any concerns that he might start the season on Injured Reserve.
As confirmed by a recent X (formerly Twitter) post from Art Stapleton, the rookie is already demonstrating his commitment to earning a place on the field.
For all those predicting Cam Skattebo would start the season on injured reserve, he did more today in team drills than either Andrew Thomas or Malik Nabers. That’s not a bad thing for AT or Nabers, just a good thing worth noting for Skattebo and the Giants.

Cam Skattebo 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Skattebo's college production at Arizona State was impressive, solidifying his status as a top prospect. In his senior year, he racked up 293 carries for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt and 131.6 rushing yards per game.
He was also a threat in the passing game, catching 45 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns. In the 2025 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against Texas, Skattebo amassed 248 total yards, with 30 carries for 143 yards and two rushing touchdowns, eight catches for 99 yards, and a 42-yard touchdown pass.
These eye-popping numbers, along with a fifth-place finish in the 2024 Heisman Trophy voting, highlight his dynamic and powerful running style.
Skattebo showcases great power and explosiveness, but he is not particularly known for his top-end speed, which may limit his effectiveness on certain plays. However, his versatility as a pass-catcher and rusher makes him an intriguing "jack-of-all-trades" option for the Giants.
His fantasy value is rising, as he has the potential to be a solid RB3 or flex play, especially if he can secure a meaningful role behind Tracy. While Skattebo may not provide immediate fantasy value, it wouldn't be surprising if he steps into the RB1 role by midseason, as is often the case with many rookies.
Currently, he is best viewed as a late-round draft target with the potential for a significant payoff later in the season.
