Jerar Encarnacion Lands on Injured List With Hamstring Strain
Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 7) with a right-hamstring strain on Friday and selected the contract of outfield prospect Drew Gilbert from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Encarnacion will go on the IL for the third time this year after injuring himself trying to beat out an infield single in Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 27-year-old won't be eligible to return to the big leagues until Aug. 17, but he may not be ready to return by then. The Dominican outfielder has intriguing power and was tearing it up in spring training before suffering an oblique injury and a fractured hand. Gilbert, who was acquired at the trade deadline in late July, is starting in right field and batting ninth on Friday for the Gigantes in his MLB debut. UPDATE: Encarnacion was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain and is expected to be out for a month to six weeks, according to manager Bob Melvin.
