Points League Hitters: Waiver Wire Pickups for Fantasy Baseball for Week 24 (2024)

Ramon Urias - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Draft Sleepers, Waiver Wire Pickups

Nicklaus Gaut's fantasy baseball H2H points league waiver-wire hitters to pick up for Week 24 (2024) from September 2 - September 8. Free-agent hitters to add in points leagues.

Welcome, RotoBallers, to the Week 24 edition of our fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups for hitters. These fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups are for the week of September 2 - September 8, looking at players below ~50% rostered on ESPN or Yahoo.

We'll be doing this points league roundup every week here at RotoBaller because we know points players get neglected and we're here to help. Player values can vary wildly from platform to platform, so we'll highlight where players are the best and worst fits, with waiver-wire targets being evaluated in terms of the different scoring systems on ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, Fantrax, and NFBC.

Position eligibility is taken from Fantrax and players are grouped by their most valuable fantasy position, using a hierarchy of C > 2B > OF > 3B > 1B > SS. Stats and rankings are calculated using games through Saturday, August 31.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and resources:

Waiver Wire Caveats and APR Explanation

Roster% Thresholds

We use a combination of Roster% to assess who is in our target pool, relying mostly on Yahoo and ESPN. For some players, you'll notice a wide discrepancy between the two. This is because ESPN's Roster% is heavily weighted by points players, with guys who don't do well in their system (often because of an inflated K% but also sometimes, who really knows?) lagging behind the Yahoo Roster%.

For this reason, you'll sometimes see players (especially early) who might make you question my sanity in including them in a waiver-wire article but don't worry, it's just a necessary glitch for coverage purposes.

APR stands for "Average Platform Rank" and is the average hitter rank between the four major point platforms: ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, and Fantrax. All player data is from FanGraphs and Baseball Savant, with injury information pulled from the Roster Resource section on the former.

Heads Up on Roster Expansions

Rosters are about to expand for September and a number of players who've been previously fantasy-relevant could rejoin their major league teams. Even if they're not coming up to be a starter, do remember they might still siphon off PAs from those who are, making their situations worth paying attention to.

These players include, but are not limited to:

Thairo Estrada, Nolan Gorman, Chas McCormick, Jasson Dominguez, James Outman, Jack Suwinski, Ben Rice, Vaughn Grissom, Rece Hinds, Kyle Manzardo, Joey Meneses, Justin Henry-Malloy, Elehuris Montero, Abraham Toro

Fantasy Baseball First Base Waiver Wire Pickups

Best Choices

Spencer Horwitz, TOR, 1B/2B (Yahoo: 12%, ESPN: 5%) - I keep waiting for the Roster% of Horwitz to jump up but so far, nothing. Horwitz was mostly ho-hum for the first month after his call-up but has been mostly stellar for a while -- since Week 15, Horwitz has averaged a 99 APR and has saved been red-hot most recently, running at #71 in Week 23 after finishing #24 in Week 22. He's still a great ROS pickup but be prepared for a light output this week, as the Blue Jays only have five games (vs PHI, @ATL) and have three LHP on schedule.

Ryan O'Hearn, BAL, 1B/OF (Yahoo: 47%, ESPN: 30%) - The Orioles only have one LHP on their Week 24 schedule (vs CHW, vs TB) but will also face a mess of shaky right-handers. AKA the kind of situation you're looking for when streaming O'Hearn.

Nathaniel Lowe, TEX, 1B (Yahoo: 49%, ESPN: 16%) - After back-to-back disasters (#251, #276), Lowe has dipped back into our Roster% pool just in time for a solid week of matchups. The Rangers are scheduled to face three LHP in their seven games (vs NYY, vs LAA), against whom the left-handed Lowe has excelled, with a .381 OBP and .351 wOBA vs LHP outpacing a .338 OBP and .314 wOBA vs RHP.

Next Choices

Spencer Torkelson, DET, 1B (Yahoo: 44%, ESPN: 36%) - How dare you suck us back in, sir. Torkelson is the #64 hitter in Week 23 after finishing #81 last week and is startable again ahead of six games on the road (@SD, @OAK) in Week 24.

Michael Toglia, COL, 1B/OF (Yahoo: 33%, ESPN: 11%) - Last week's cover boy has been a total disaster, currently ranking #273 even after a week of games on the moon. Granted, he still has one game left and anything can happen at Coors but this was not the week we were looking for. The Rockies go on the road in Week 24 (@ATL, @MIL) but Toglia has been about the only Colorado hitter worth starting away from Coors, with a .372 wOBA and .888 OPS.

Josh Bell, ARI, 1B (Yahoo: 43%, ESPN: 36%) - A staple of this space, Bell's point-scoring profile gives him a high floor nearly every week, with the occasional top-75 upside. However, you should be careful this week with four LHP on the Arizona schedule (vs LAD, @SF, @HOU).

Desperate Choices

Nolan Schanuel, LAA, 1B (Yahoo: 9%, ESPN: 5%) - Schanuel has been mostly a metronome of points production, being driven by excellent plate discipline and a pile of PAs. It's a tough week, though, with two LHP scheduled in their six games (vs LAD, @TEX).

Connor Joe, PIT, 1B/OF (Yahoo: 10%, ESPN: 14%) - Connor Joe renaissance, anyone? Joe is the #78 hitter in Week 23 after a mostly terrible second half but the Pirates will see five LHP in their seven games this week (@CHC, vs WSH), so his playing time should be up.

Seth Brown, OAK, 1B/OF (Yahoo: 3%, ESPN: 2%) - Brown has been pretty solid lately (as long as he's not facing an LHP), with a #43 ranking this week his highest mark since Week 18. Oakland is only scheduled to face one LHP (vs SEA, vs DET) but the A's will still face a brutal battery of starters (Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, Tarik Skubal).

On the IL

Fantasy Baseball Second Base Waiver Wire Pickups

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, PIT, 2B/3B/SS/OF (Yahoo: 21%, ESPN: 9%) - Our initialized utility superstar has been fairly decent since joining the Pirates, as his compiler profile and great discipline plays well when playing every day. IKF is set for a strong week in Week 24 (@CHC, vs WSH) with a lot of shaky pitching and five LHP scheduled out of seven games.

Ramon Urias, BAL, 2B/3B (Yahoo: 30%, ESPN: 6%) - Ramon Urias just won't stop hitting -- he's ranked #69 in Week 23, which would make his third-straight top-100 finish, and fourth in the last five weeks. It's a good week to keep riding him, with the White Sox and Rays coming into town for six games.

Nick Gonzales, PIT, 2B (Yahoo: 6%, ESPN: 3%) - My fellow Nick has gotten things back moving since returning from the IL, currently running #123 headed into Sunday. Like the rest of Pittsburgh, the right-handed Gonzales will see left-handers in five of their seven games.

Next Choices

Tommy Edman, LAD, 2B/SS/OF (Yahoo: 36%, ESPN: 22%) - Edman is apparently healthy and has started every game but one since coming of the IL for the Dodgers. It's always been a points-friendly profile and should continue to be so if playing every day in the Dodgers' potent lineup.

Michael Massey, KC, 2B (Yahoo: 3%, ESPN: 2%) - Massey basically starts every game vs RHP (last sitting against a righty on August 14) and the Royals don't have any LHP on the board for Week 24 (vs CLE, vs MIN). Not that he's an All-Star but Massey should start at least five of those games, all coming in the top-third of the lineup.

Whit Merrifield, ATL, 2B/3B/OF (Yahoo: 17%, ESPN: 6%) - Merrifield has stunk in Week 23 (#223) but has basically been a top-100(ish) hitter since becoming the everyday starter in Atlanta. He's a solid bet to do so again in Week 24, with shaky pitching from Colorado (and Toronto) coming to town.

Desperate Choices

Jared Triolo, PIT, 2B/3B (Yahoo: 2%, ESPN: 1%) - Triolo has been excelling since taking over for the injured Ke'Bryan Hayes, coming in at #89 in Week 22 and sitting at #68 currently in Week 23. I still wouldn't count on a lot of ceiling but the righthander (like the rest of his Pirates brethren) will see five LHP in their seven games (@CHC, vs WSH).

Connor Norby, MIA, 2B (Yahoo: 43%, ESPN: 13%) - The rookie continues to shine (#41 in Week 22, #45 in Week 23) but do be aware we have some serious smoke behind the mirror. Norby's .263 AVG has a .197 xBA behind it, while a .357 wOBA is backed by a .266 xwOBA. Seeing Ranger Suarez, Zack Wheeler, and Aaron Nola in Week 24 probably won't help those values rise.

On the IL

  • Vidal Brujan, MIA, 2B/3B/SS/OF sprained shoulder - no timetable)
  • Oliver Dunn, MIL, 2B/3B (strained back - no timetable)

Fantasy Baseball Third Base Waiver Wire Pickups

Best Choices

Paul DeJong, KC, 3B/SS (Yahoo: 12%, ESPN: 4%) - When DeJong is hot it's usually a good idea to ride him until he's not --he is the #37 hitter in Week 23 and had started six games in a row prior to taking a seat on Sunday. I'll bet on it staying up, as the Royals have no left-handers scheduled in their six games (vs CLE, vs MIN).

Next Choices

Jose Tena, WSH, 3B/SS (Yahoo: 0%, ESPN: 1%) - Tena was traded to Washington from Cleveland and after initially starting at Triple-A, has now started all but one of the 18 games in which he was available (missed two games due to injury) and continues to mash, slashing .339/.369/.468 over 65 PA, WITH 2 HR and a 136 wRC+. There is still a lot of whiffery in his game but the 23-year-old has kept his strikeouts under control so far this season, with a 22% K% after a 25% K% in 405 PA at Triple-A for the Guardians. This is a good week to keep riding him, as the left-hander is scheduled to only face RHP in his six games (@MIA, @PIT).

Ernie Clement, TOR, 3B/SS (Yahoo: 23%, ESPN: 5%) - Clement fell to #164 this week after back-to-back top-50 weeks but a 9% K% and full-time PAs should still keep him relevant under most scoring systems.

On the IL

  • Jeimer Candelario, CIN, 1B/3B (fractured toe - no timetable)
  • Ke'Bryan Hayes, PIT, 3B (lower back - no timetable)
  • Brooks Lee, MIN, 3B/SS (biceps tendinitis - rehab assignment)
  • Jon Berti, NYY, 3B/SS (strained calf - rehab assignment)
  • Yoan Moncada, CHW, 3B (strained groin - rehab assignment)
  • Vidal Brujan, MIA, 2B/3B/SS/OF sprained shoulder - no timetable)
  • Oliver Dunn, MIL, 2B/3B (strained back - no timetable)

Fantasy Baseball Shortstop Waiver Wire Pickups

Best Choices

Masyn Winn, STL, SS (Yahoo: 43%, ESPN: 19%) - Oh, sweet jeebus...We're so close -- can you feel it??? Winn has dominated points basically all summer and is now FINALLY at the point of crossing our Roster% threshold after yet another top-50 performance in Week 23 (#48). Oh, sweet sanity; I wish to know you again.

Next Choices

Orlando Arcia, ATL, SS (Yahoo: 10%, ESPN: 8%) - Pay no mind to Arcia, who just put up another top-50 week and has some brutal Colorado pitching coming to town for Week 24 action.

Ernie Clement, TOR, 3B/SS (Yahoo: 23%, ESPN: 5%) - Clement fell to #164 this week after back-to-back top-50 weeks but a 9% K% and full-time PAs should still keep him relevant under most scoring systems.

Desperate Choices

Addison Barger, TOR, 3B/SS/OF (Yahoo: 47%, ESPN: 30%) - Barger has now started 10 straight games (and 15-of-16) at third base or in the outfield and is hitting enough to have earned it. He has a 70 APR in Week 23 but only gets five games in Week 24 (vs PHI, @ATL), with three coming vs LHP.

On the IL

  • Trevor Story, BOS, SS (shoulder surgery - no timetable)
  • Brooks Lee, MIN, 3B/SS (biceps tendinitis - rehab assignment)
  • Wenceel Perez, DET, SS/OF (strained oblique - no timetable)
  • Jon Berti, NYY, 3B/SS (strained calf - rehab assignment)
  • Vidal Brujan, MIA, 2B/3B/SS/OF sprained shoulder - no timetable)

Fantasy Baseball Outfielder Waiver Wire Pickups

Best Choices

Ryan O'Hearn, BAL, 1B/OF (Yahoo: 47%, ESPN: 30%) - The Orioles only have one LHP on their Week 24 schedule (vs CHW, vs TB) but will also face a mess of shaky right-handers. AKA the kind of situation you're looking for when streaming O'Hearn.

J.J. Bleday, OAK, OF (Yahoo: 28%, ESPN: 22%) - Poor J.J. Bleday can't even buy some respect. Bleday is the #59 hitter (yes, you read that right) and at #17 currently is set to post his third-straight top-50 week. The pitching matchups aren't easy (vs SEA, vs DET) but Bleday should again be solid with no LHP on the schedule.

Jo Adell, LAA, OF (Yahoo: 12%, ESPN: 4%) - Everyone, please!!! Be very, very quiet -- Jo Adell frightens easily. However, the wildly inconsistent, post-hype prospect is #60 in Week 23 and had three top-50 weeks in the six periods prior to now. Again...He frightens easily so try not to make direct eye contact. Adell and the Angels get six games in Week 24 (vs LAD, @TEX), with two coming vs LHP.

Next Choices

Jesse Winker, NYM, OF (Yahoo: 27%, ESPN: 13%) - Much like J.J. Bleday, Winker continues to get little respect, even as he's a top-75 hitter for the season. Winker is the #57 hitter in Week 24 and gets six games in Week 24 (vs BOS, vs CIN), with only one coming vs an LHP.

Bryan De La Cruz, PIT, OF (Yahoo: 38%, ESPN: 17%) - My guy, BDLC, it's your ti-iime! De La Cruz has been relatively decent since joining the Pirates but is setup for success with five LHP on the board for Week 24 (@CHC, vs WSH).

Victor Robles, SEA, OF (Yahoo: 7%, ESPN: 2%) - After three straight weeks of being as bad as he was good in the three weeks before that, Robles has turned things back around to the good in Week 23, currently sitting at #35 heading into Sunday. The Mariners have seven decent games to see if he can keep it going, going to Oakland and St. Louis, with only one LHP on the board.

Lars Nootbaar, STL, OF (Yahoo: 47%, ESPN: 30%) - Nootbaar has somewhat gotten off of the sneid lately and will have a good chance to keep in going in Week 24 (@MIL, vs SEA) with no LHP on the schedule.

Pete Crow-Armstrong, CHC, OF (Yahoo: 44%, ESPN: 17%) - Oh my Hansel, that PCA is so hot right now. Crow-Armstrong is the #15 hitter entering Sunday in Week 23, after finishing #15 in Week 22, as well, and being a top-100(ish) hitter for the three weeks before that. A bottom-third lineup spot still isn't ideal but this is a streak of hotness that needs to be paid attention to. Just don't be too disappointed if Week 24 is a dud -- the Cubs have six games at home (vs PIT, vs NYY) with two coming vs LHP, as well as tough matchups with Jared Jones, Paul Skenes, Nestor Cortes, and Gerrit Cole.

Desperate Choices

Luke Raley, SEA, 1B/OF (Yahoo: 10%, ESPN: 2%) - Raley has been junk in Week 23 (#328) but Seattle has seven games in Week 24 (@OAK, @STL) and only one is scheduled against the lefties that he struggles with.

M.J. Melendez, KC, OF (Yahoo: 31%, ESPN: 5%) - He's been up and down all season but the left-handed Melendez should get plenty of PAs in a week where the Royals won't see any LHP (vs CLE, vs MIN).

Randal Grichuk, ARI, OF (Yahoo: 1%, ESPN: 0%) - What do we do when we're desperate and Randal Grichuk is set to face four LHP in seven games? That's right, kids; we stream him.

On the IL:

      • Esteury Ruiz, OAK, OF (strained wrist - no timetable)
      • Alex Call, WSH, OF (foot - no timetable)
      • Jake Fraley, CIN, OF (sprained knee - no timetable)
      • Heston Kjerstad, BAL, OF (concussion - no timetable)
      • Kris Bryant, COL, 1B/OF (strained back - no timetable)
      • Hunter Renfroe, KC, OF (sprained hamstring - no timetable)
      • Wenceel Perez, DET, SS/OF (strained oblique - no timetable)
      • Alex Kirilloff, MIN, 1B/OF (back discomfort - rehab assignment)
      • Michael Siani, STL, OF (strained oblique - rehab assignment)
      • Vidal Brujan, MIA, 2B/3B/SS/OF sprained shoulder - no timetable)

Fantasy Baseball Catcher Waiver Wire Pickups

Best Choices

Austin Wells, NYY, C (Yahoo: 26%, ESPN: 10%) - Wells has been excellent in the second half, getting the lion's share of PAs while moving up to the middle of a potent Yankees lineup. After his worst scoring period in over two months in Week 22 (#261), Wells has bounced back with a #21 ranking heading into Sunday's action. Let's also cut him some slack on the recent dip, though, with it coming while the Yankees were in the middle of a super-heavy left-hander stretch, at one point facing an LHP in eight of ten games. With a combination of excellent discipline and a cushy lineup spot, expect Wells to keep producing.

Next Choices

Shea Langeliers, OAK, C (Yahoo: 41%, ESPN: 8%) - Just like all season, there's always Langeliers, who has dipped in and out of our Roster% threshold but generally puts up a startable week, even considering his team situation. He will again rack up a lot of PAs in a seven-game homestand (vs SEA, vs DET) but the starters shouldn't inspire much confidence, with Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, and Tarik Skubal all on the schedule.

Keibert Ruiz, WSH, C (Yahoo: 31%, ESPN: 48%) - Ruiz saw his recent streak of excellence (relative to his position) come to an end in Week 23, currently running a 390 APR but is setup decently for a rebound in Week 24. He'll get six games (@MIA, @PIT) with no LHP scheduled but a Jared Jones/Paul Skenes combo to finish the week isn't exactly ideal.

Desperate Choices

Miguel Amaya, CHC, C (Yahoo: 31%, ESPN: 30%) - Amaya continues his recent hot streak, coming in as #91 heading into Sunday after finishing all the way up at #8 in Week 22. However, I'd be really hesitant to use him in Week 24, considering the schedule (vs PIT, vs NYY), with Jared Jones, Paul Skenes, Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, and Clarke Schmidt all set to stare the Cubs down.

Alejandro Kirk, TOR, C (Yahoo: 8%, ESPN: 6%) - Just like clockwork, Kirk turned in a big stinker (#282) following a top-50 period in Week 22. I'm out on him in Week 24, as well, with Toronto only playing five games (vs PHI, @ATL) and with LHP scheduled in three of them.

Henry Davis, PIT, C (Yahoo: 4%, ESPN: 1%) -

Yasmani Grandal, PIT, C (Yahoo: 1%, ESPN: 0%) -

Only the desperate (and those in daily leagues) should be considering either of the Pittsburgh duo that will now share playing time with the IL trip from Joey Bart but a schedule that features five LHP might make things more interesting for Henry Davis. He likely won't get all five starts but could see 3-4.

On the IL

      • Joey Bart, PIT, C (strained hamstring - no timetable)
      • Gabriel Moreno, ARI, C (strained groin - no timetable)
      • Tom Murphy, SF, C (sprained knee - no timetable)
