Euro 2024 Fantasy Preview: Matchday 5 Tips and Top Captaincy Picks for the Quarter-Finals

Soccer - Euro 2024, fantasy preview

The FPL Manual shares insights on the best Euro 2024 fantasy tips, top captaincy picks, and recommended players ahead of Matchday 5.

A spectacular performance from Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa showcased his shot-stopping ability, shutting out Slovenia from Euro 2024. Spanish forward Nico Williams' elite performance led the Spaniards to a 4-1 victory against Georgia. Additionally, a resilient performance from Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo helped the Dutch side secure a 3-0 victory against Romania, advancing them to the final eight teams set for the quarter-finals.

RotoBaller remains your favorite outlet for the best fantasy news worldwide and continues to dive into UEFA Euro 2024. In this article, we will look at the top fantasy tips to consider and provide insights using statistics and metrics on what to expect ahead of the upcoming fixtures for Matchday 5.

Join me, the FPL Manual, as we analyze the top captaincy picks, best tips for your fantasy team, and recommended players to keep an eye out for in the next round.

UEFA Euro 2024 - Round of 16 Recap

Switzerland defeated defending champion Italy 2-0, knocking the Azzurri out of the competition. Other highlights included host Germany defeating Denmark 2-0, Belgium losing 1-0 to France, England's labored 2-1 win over Slovakia, and Türkiye's 2-1 victory over Group D winner Austria.

In terms of individual performance, Jamal Musiala of Germany took his goal tally to three and remain top for points in Euro Fantasy. Spain's midfield general, Fabian Ruiz, earned 10 points after scoring his second of the tournament.

England's Jude Bellingham's late overhead kick equalizer against Slovakia earned him nine points. After contributing a goal and an assist against Romania, Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands finished with 12 points and is now among the top goal-scorers for Euro 2024.

Matchday 5 Euro Fantasy Tips

Target Netherlands and Spain's Attack, Invest in England's Defense

Approaching the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals, Euro fantasy managers should focus on attacking assets from either the Netherlands or Spain. Matchday 5 projections have the Netherlands scoring 1.95 expected goals (xG), with Spain and Germany close behind at 1.33 xG. Spain has scored nine goals in the contest, trailing only host Germany by one.

In terms of expected clean sheets for Matchday 5, England and the Netherlands each have a 38% likelihood of keeping a clean sheet in the quarter-finals, making their defensive assets worth considering as well.

This week's recommended targets include Netherlands' Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons, Spain's Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, and any of England's Kyle Walker or Jordan Pickford from the Three Lions backline.

It is vital to know that during the quarter-finals, managers have just three free transfers to bring in new recruits to their teams; therefore, prepare your selections wisely.

Matchday 5 Top Captain Picks

The fifth gameweek of Euro 2024 offers a plethora of mouthwatering captain picks to choose from. Players like Portugal veteran Cristiano Ronaldo against France and England captain Harry Kane taking on Switzerland all make a strong case for the armband. However, my top-2 picks are:

Cody Gakpo (€7.5m) - Netherlands

Stepping up to lead the Netherlands to the next round, it is only natural that the Dutch top goal-scorer, Cody Gakpo, ascends to the top of the captaincy list for Matchday 5.

In the last six meetings between the Netherlands and Türkiye, the Dutch side has won three, including a 6-1 victory in their most recent matchup. Amassing an expected goal involvement of 1.24 xGI in Matchday 4, the in-form forward Gakpo will be ready to get on the scoresheet against the Crescent-Stars.

Jamal Musiala (€8.5m) - Germany

The 21-year-old German attacker has been sensational for DFB Eleven and is the leading scorer in UEFA Euro 2024. Although, based on head-to-head statistics, Germany has secured more draws than wins against Spain. The host nation will rely on home advantage to gain the cutting edge against the fellow contenders.

Jamal Musiala will look to score his fourth Euro 2024 goal against Spain next, making him a good captaincy pick for the quarter-finals.

It's worth noting that Euro Fantasy managers can change captains daily during each gameweek, giving managers a more diverse set of possibilities on any given day. Feel free to select any other top captain option not mentioned above.

Differential Captain Pick (<10% ownership)

Arda Güler (€5.9m) - Türkiye

The 19-year-old Real Madrid youngster has been instrumental for the Crescent-Stars. Arda Güler, who has only been benched once in his last four Euro appearances for Türkiye, boasts impressive stats, amassing 2.5 shots per 90 minutes and creating two big chances for his nation in Euro 2024.

Assuming he starts for the Crescent-Stars this weekend, Güler is projected to significantly contribute to his nation’s attacking threat against the Netherlands.

Owned by only 7% of managers, Güler is an intriguing differential captain option for Matchday 5. If you are looking to gain an edge in your mini-league, considering Güler could provide the unique advantage you need.
