ANALYSIS: The San Diego Padres currently hold the second Wild Card berth in the National League, and if they want to remain competitive, then they will need a strong rotation. They began the season with a solid rotation that included veterans Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, but also offseason acquisitions Dylan Cease and Michael King. With Darvish and Musgrove hitting the IL, they looked to the minors to fill the void.
The Padres decided to call up Adam Mazur from Triple-A. Mazur was selected in the 2022 MLB Draft, so he's been able to move up the ladder rather quickly. Making it to the majors is no small feat, and to make it that quickly is eye-opening. So what does he have to offer? Well, the University of Iowa product's calling card is command, posting a 4.4% walk rate over 28 starts (including four at Triple-A). The K% was good at 23.6%, although the 8.55 K/9 is a little lower than we're used to seeing these days. The righty also posted a 3.18 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
Welcome to the show, Adam Mazur
— Padres Nation (@NationPadres) June 5, 2024
The 23-year-old made his debut on June 4, going six innings against the Angels, allowing one run on two hits and four walks while striking out two. The next start, however, did not go as well. Mazur went three innings against the Diamondbacks, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two. In total, over nine innings, he's posted seven walks (17.1%) to four strikeouts (9.8%), so he has not been as sharp in the majors. Mazur is set to make at least one more start before Yu Darvish returns, so he'll get another shot to prove himself against the Mets on Saturday in New York.
The Mets are middle-of-the-pack in terms of runs scored and batting average, and they don't strike out a lot, so this could be a somewhat tough test for the youngster. Managers desperate for pitching could take a flier on Mazur in hopes he can find his control, but there's no guarantee he'll stick around once Darvish and Musgrove return, as Cease, King, and Matt Waldron have all been good for the Friars and would round out the five-man rotation. Mazur is available in 95% of Yahoo leagues for managers interested in his services.

Brady House - Fantasy Baseball Prospects Waiver Wire Stashes (Week 12)
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12-team leagues CALL-UP ETA: June ANALYSIS: The Nationals went viral on social media this week for making a fun call-up. They called up their bat dog from Triple-A. While this was very cute and should improve the vibes a little bit in Washington, I don't think Bruce the Bat Dog will help […]

Samuel Basallo - Fantasy Baseball Prospects Waiver Wire Stashes (Week 12)
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12-team leagues CALL-UP ETA: June ANALYSIS: Samuel Basallo might be the best hitter in the minors right now, and he has catcher eligibility. What more do you need to know (I know catcher is super deep this year, but still)? Basallo has been an age-to-level monster for the majority of his pro […]

Andrew Painter - Fantasy Baseball Prospects Waiver Wire Stashes (Week 12)
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12-team leagues CALL-UP ETA: June ANALYSIS: Painter's last two starts don't give a ton of confidence that he is ready to be in the majors. It may not even be before the All-Star break before we see him, but that does not mean we are in stash territory. The good news is, […]

Colby Thomas - Fantasy Baseball Prospects Waiver Wire Stashes (Week 12)
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ team leagues CALL-UP ETA: July ANALYSIS: The A's continue to lose, and Colby Thomas continues to hit homers in Triple-A.
