UEFA Euro 2024: Group A Preview - Odds, Predictions, and Players to Watch

Soccer - Euro 2024, Group Previews

RotoBaller's Euro 2024 coverage continues with a Group A preview of Germany, Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland. Odds, Predictions, and Players to Watch.

Happy Euro 2024, RotoBallers! The tournament is just a couple of weeks away, and soccer fans are ready to witness the top nations in Europe battle it out for a spot in the finals at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. Elite football stars worldwide, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and many more, will represent their nations when the contest starts on June 14, 2024.

After a three-year break, Euro 2024 coverage is back on Rotoballer. Our dedicated team is ready to bring you comprehensive coverage, from Group Previews to the fantasy game and the day-to-day action of DFS during the tournament.

Don't miss out on our extensive Euro 2024 coverage. This is just one of our six group previews. You can access the other five previews and the rest of our Euro 2024 coverage here on Rotoballer.

Overview: Group A

Germany and Scotland will set the stage for the rest of the tournament as they open proceedings on June 14. However, that game may be the least important Group A fixture. Germany will advance and should top the group. However, the scrap for second and the possibility of a third-place advancement will come down to the battle between Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland. It should come down to the final group games for those three sides to see who advances. A win for any country over the other will be a massive step towards the knockout rounds. Hungary is hungry, Scotland is ready to make history, and Switzerland hopes to let the golden era continue for one last ride.

Schedule

Team 1 Team 2 Date Time (EDT)
Germany Scotland Jun. 14 3:00 PM
Hungary Switzerland Jun. 15 9:00 AM
Germany Hungary Jun. 19 Noon
Scotland Switzerland Jun. 19 3:00 PM
Switzerland Germany Jun. 23 3:00 PM
Scotland Hungary Jun. 23 3:00 PM

Germany

Bettings Odds (Bet365)

Win Group: -300

Advance: -2000

Win Euro 2024: +650

Player to Watch: Kai Havertz - Forward, Arsenal

After a rough start to his Arsenal career in the English Premier League with Chelsea, Kai Havertz came alive in the second half of the season. The 24-year-old started the final 16 games of Arsenal's domestic campaign, and from February 7 onwards (14 games), Havertz produced eight goals and six assists. If he can carry that form into the summer, Germany will have an extremely potent attack. Havertz may have to deal with competition from Borussia Dortmund's Nikolas Fulkrug, but it's a lethal one-two punch for Die Mannschaft.

Prediction: Win Group; Losing in the Semi-finals

It's been a down decade for Germany in international soccer, but the lead-up to Euro 2024 has provided much-needed optimism for the host nation. They should breeze through Group A into the knockout rounds, where a potential tie with England or Denmark awaits. A quarter-final berth feels like the minimum expectation, but a surprise run to the final isn't out of the question.

Scotland

Bettings Odds (Bet365)

Win Group: +1100

Advance: -138

Win Euro 2024: +10000

Player to Watch: Scott McTominay - Midfielder, Manchester United

Romelu Lukaku, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane. Those strikers were the only four to outscore Scott McTominay in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. McSauce was the secret sauce for Scotland's emphatic qualification run. The Manchester United midfielder bagged two goals in a historic victory over Spain and added five more goals and an assist during the rest of the qualifying round. The Scot is a set-piece threat in the air and often makes those late runs into the box to find himself on the end of some tantalizing cutbacks from Andrew Robertson or Jon McGinn. McSauce will be on the loose in Germany.

Prediction: Advance; Losing in the Round of 16

Scotland hasn't won a match at an international tournament since Euro 1996. However, that long, 28-year wait comes to an end this summer. An upset over Germany would be a tall task, but the Tartan Army could line up with Switzerland or Hungary on their day. A win gives any country a great chance at advancing to the knockout rounds (something Scotland has never done). Victory over Hungary in the final group game creates history for Scotland, where they'll face one of Spain, Italy, or Croatia.

Hungary

Bettings Odds (Bet365)

Win Group: +900

Advance: -150

Win Euro 2024: +8000

Player to Watch: Dominik Szoboszlai - Midfielder, Liverpool

After a breakout couple of seasons with RB Leipzig, Dominik Szoboszlai made the move to the English Premier League to join Jurgen Klopp's new-look midfield. While his German manager moved on, the Hungarian midfielder proved he had the chops to cut it in England's top flight. In 45 appearances for Liverpool, Hungary's Captain bagged seven goals and four assists in an attack with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz. The 24-year-old has 12 goals in 40 appearances for his country and will fancy tacking on a couple more in the group's easier fixtures versus Switzerland and Scotland.

Prediction - Advance; Losing in the Quarter-finals

Hungary fell at the first hurdle during the last Euro competition, but they expect to go one further in 2024. The squad is still young but has several up-and-coming, attacking players at their disposal. There's always one team that makes a surprise run, and it could be Hungary's time to shine. There's a possibility of an upset against Germany, but if they keep it together versus Switzerland and Scotland, they should advance to the knockout stages.

Switzerland

Bettings Odds (Bet365)

Win Group: +650

Advance: -200

Win Euro 2024: +6600

Player to Watch: Xherden Shaqiri - Midfielder, Chicago Fire

Premier League and MLS fans will recognize Xherden Shaqiri from his time at Stoke City, Liverpool, and the Chicago Fire. The veteran midfielder has been on the national stage for a decade but still has that talismanic quality for his country. There are several exciting attacking options for Switzerland, but Shaqiri still seems to be the straw that stirs the drink for the A-team. He's got two goals in 12 appearances for Chicago this season and is the second most-capped player in Swiss history. This may be his swan song, but he wants to go out on a high note.

Prediction - Eliminated in the Group Stage

It feels like the end of an era for Switzerland. Three of the four most-capped players in the country's history are in the current squad. They pulled off the upset of all upsets at Euro 2020 versus France, but the Cinderella story doesn't have a final chapter. Germany and Hungary will be too harsh, so any hopes of qualifying for the Round of 16 will come down to the result against Scotland.
