ANALYSIS: Matt Vierling is coming off a 99 wRC+ season in 2023 after he hit .261 with 10 home runs, 44 RBI, 63 R, and six stolen bases. After going undrafted in many fantasy leagues, expectations were not very high for 2024. Whatever those expectations were, he's likely already surpassed them or soon will. Over the first month of the season, the 27-year-old's numbers looked much like last year's, hitting .268 with two home runs (six XBH total) in 82 AB. Then the calendar flipped to May and he's begun to break out, hitting .309 with five home runs (11 XBH total) in 81 AB.

Detroit has moved him to the top third of the order lately, even hitting leadoff recently, which should be a boon to his run-scoring and potentially his RBI production. Is it sustainable? Well, his Contact% remains solid (83.8%) and he's reduced his chase rate dramatically (22.8%) while increasing his barrel rate over last year (6.3%). The BABIP of .333 is high, but not compared to his career BABIP of .319. The only perplexing thing is that he's got an 88th percentile sprint speed, but has yet to steal a base.
The former fifth-round MLB Draft pick is owned in just 41% of Yahoo leagues for managers looking for a hot bat and he's eligible at both 3B and OF, making him even more attractive as a solid waiver wire pickup.
