ANALYSIS: Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Ben Lively has looked quite solid after joining the starting rotation and is worth rostering in deeper leagues. Lively has a strong 2.61 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through five starts (27 ½ innings) with a 9:26 BB:K ratio.
The 32-year-old has only surrendered more than three earned runs in one start and has struck out at least five batters in all but one. While Ben Lively's performance has been strong, a closer look at his underlying metrics suggests a potential for regression. His 4.45 xERA and .263 xBA are relatively high, primarily due to his lower strikeout and ground ball rates.
Nonetheless, in 15-team mixed leagues and AL-only formats, Lively is worth adding because he seems to have a strong hold on Cleveland's final rotation spot. However, his ratios should not remain that low in the future, so do not expect Lively to continue to produce as a sub-3.00 ERA starting pitcher.
