Week 9 Fantasy Football Matchups We Love: The Fantasy Matchmaker

Joe Mixon - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

Welcome back to the Week 9 Fantasy Matchmaker article looking at Week 9 matchups we love! This is my weekly series for RotoBaller where I look at the matchup strength for pretty much every viable fantasy football player across the fantasy skill positions.

We have moved past the halfway point of the fantasy football season and move into a crucial stretch of games for fantasy managers barely hanging onto hopes of making the playoffs, and those hovering around .500, where separating from the pack can boil down to a few start/sit decisions.

In this article, I will present my updated rankings for matchup strengths for the QB, WR, RB, and TE positions based on my adjusted fantasy points allowed process and present some start and sit recommendations.

Editor's Note: Our incredible team of writers won two writing awards and received 12 award nominations by the Fantasy Sports Writers Association. A big congrats to our very own Byron Lindeque (Golf) and Jordan McAbee (NASCAR) for both winning Writer Of The Year awards! Be sure to follow RotoBaller's analysis and advice all year long, and win more. Win More With RotoBaller!

My Methodology

The common method for analyzing fantasy football matchups and strength of opponent is by fantasy points allowed. How many fantasy points has that opponent been allowing to that position on average? This is something I track weekly, but I take it a bit further as only looking at raw fantasy points allowed per game does not tell the whole story. My strength of schedule scoring entering Week 9 includes what each team has given up in Weeks 1-8 (including the average). I also incorporate “opponent-adjusted” data, looking at what teams are giving up compared to what their opponents have averaged at each fantasy skill position.

This is also called Points Over Average (POA). For example, when comparing raw fantasy points allowed per game and opponent-adjusted fantasy points allowed per game, one of the biggest discrepancies is the Raiders versus QBs. The Raiders are ranked 20th versus WRs in raw fantasy PPG allowed. But they are ranked as the third-toughest matchup when adjusting for opponents faced. And over the last five games they have been the toughest QB matchup. It has been a tale of two mini-seasons for the Raiders versus fantasy QBs. After four games, they had allowed opposing QBs to score 2.2 above their season average (POA allowed of +2.2). Over the last four games, they have held QBs 7.3 fantasy points below their season average (POA allowed of -7.3).

This is partly due to a clampdown on passing TDs. The Raiders allowed a total of eight passing TDs in the first month. Since then, they have allowed only two. Outside of Jared Goff, they have not faced any top-level QBs, but POA accounts for that as it shows they were holding those bad QBs below even their bad averages. My ranking process incorporates raw fantasy points allowed as well as season-long POA, POA over the last five games, and POA over the last three games.

RotoBaller generates positional and overall player rankings (all positions) for Points Per Reception (PPR), half PPR, and Standard (no PPR) each week, which will be included when looking at matchups for each positional group. The idea is to show each relevant skill position player’s matchup and positional rank for that week. Each table will be filtered based on the positional rankings so you can see the matchup strength for the must-starts as well as for borderline starters, flex options, and desperation dart throws. I encourage you to check out RotoBaller’s Week 9 ranks, available here.

I will conclude the article by looking back at my takes from last week, both the matchups I loved and matchups I avoided, to point the microscope at myself and see how I did.

Week 9 Fantasy Football Quarterback Matchups

The following shows the projected matchup strength for the QB position in Week 9. The table includes the QB, the Week 9 positional rank (according to RotoBaller), the opponent, and the opponent’s projected rank versus fantasy QBs according to my scoring system. The table is filtered in the same order as the Rotoballer positional rankings.

The additional data points I am including for QBs are the projected point totals in each game, the spread, and the implied total points for the QB’s team (all from FanDuel.com).

Week 9: QB Matchups We Love

Derek Carr (QB10)
Opponent: CHI
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 21st

The Bears may not seem like the cakewalk matchup they were earlier in the season ranked at 21. Yes, that is still a positive matchup, but Chicago was among the most fantasy-friendly QB matchups earlier in the season. And while they have been slightly improved, the ranking is a little misleading. Season-long, the Bears have a QB POA allowed of +1.3, but over their last three games that drops to -4.2, meaning they have held QBs 4.2 PPG under their average.

That includes a game against the Raiders with a combination of Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell at QB. The Bears’ POA allowed in that game was -5.8, but that was compared to the Raiders’ QB PPG average on the season, which does not account for the downgrade of Hoyer/O’Connell at QB. Essentially, my system gives a little too much credit to the Bears’ defense in that game.

There is still a sour taste associated with Derek Carr after he averaged only 8.7 PPG in September. However, since Kamara returned to the lineup, Carr’s PPG has increased to 17.4, with 18+ fantasy points in his last two games. For reference, 17.4 PPG would be around QB12 if it were season-long. Carr’s matchups were positive in three out of the last four which has aided his PPG increase, but he gets another good matchup in Week 9. At a 66% rostership in Yahoo leagues, he does not fit the “streamer” category perfectly, but he is a solid option as a Kirk Cousins replacement and one of the better QB2 options in Week 9.

Baker Mayfield (QB14)
Opponent: @HOU
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 28th

Baker Mayfield gets one of the better QB matchups in Week 9 against the Texans. The Texans’ season-long POA allowed is only 0.7 PPG, but over their last three games, they have allowed fantasy QBs to score 5.3 above their average, including allowing Derek Carr to throw for 353 yards and score 11.9 points above what was his average PPG at the time. Mayfield has been above 17 fantasy points in four of seven games, including two above 20 points. He has avoided the mistakes that plagued his days in Cleveland with 10 TD passes to only four interceptions. Mayfield has been able to support two fantasy WRs for most of the season with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Rachaad White is also in line for a good fantasy day after having seen 17 targets in the last three games and the Texans ranking 26th against RB PFR. At only 39% rostered in Yahoo leagues, Mayfield is another solid streaming option that is more widely available than Carr. I still prefer Carr in Week 9, but Mayfield should provide a high floor.

Week 9: Not Great, Bob – QB Matchups to Avoid

Daniel Jones (QB16)
Opponent: @LV
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 4th

It seems like it’s been months since we have seen Daniel Jones suit up. Jones hasn’t played a full game since Week 4, when the Seahawks sacked him 11 times in a 24-3 rout of the Giants on Monday Night Football. The Giants offense under Tyrod Taylor gave the Bills a run for their money and beat the Commanders, but everything fell apart for the passing game in Week 8 against the Jets. It may seem like an obvious call to advise sitting Daniel Jones, but I don’t think people realize just how tough the Raiders have been on QBs lately.

The Raiders are one of those defenses that has been fantasy-friendly to pretty much all positions in recent years, and that preconceived name value (or lack thereof) can be hard to shake. I broke down the Raiders versus QBs in the “My Methodology” section earlier in the article and they are currently the fourth-toughest matchup for fantasy QBs, which is the final nail in the coffin of any consideration of starting Jones in Week 9.

Will Levis (QB18)
Opponent: @PIT
Opponent Rank vs. QB: 13th

Will Levis has pulled me in all sorts of directions this week. He was my top waiver add for teams struggling at QB. It is unlike me to go from being lower than most on Levis to racing to the waiver wire for him after only one game, but that sums up the fantasy QB position this season. And I may throw caution to the wind and start him in Week 9 on a few struggling teams where I need a spark. But I do not advise starting him in one-QB leagues outside of those desperate situations.

The Steelers rank 13th versus fantasy QBs, which is in the tougher half of teams, but not a rank that would automatically move me off any QB. If you read my Defense Streamers and Starts article for RotoBaller (available here) you saw that I have the Steelers ranked as the number two fantasy defense in Week 9. And although Levis exceeded all of our wildest expectations in his debut against the Falcons, he is a big reason for that ranking. A rookie QB making his second NFL start (and first start on the road) in Pittsburgh is not a scenario I’m betting on to go well. I would love to be wrong about this, and I honestly hope I am wrong about Levis. I hope he becomes another young exciting QB in the NFL as it makes things more fun.

Week 9 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Matchups

The following WR table shows the top 70 WRs for Week 9 (according to RotoBaller; PPR), opponent, and opponent rank versus fantasy WRs.

Week 9: WR Matchups We Love

Diontae Johnson (WR25)
Opponent: TEN
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 25th

Diontae Johnson was the best WR on the field in the Steelers’ Week 8 game versus the Jaguars. He showed no ill effects of the injury that kept him sidelined for the better part of four games. For a moment while he was out I thought teammate George Pickens had taken over the WR1 role in Pittsburgh for good. But I, like many people out there, continued to underrate Johnson. And this isn’t meant to bury Pickens. Pickens is another player I was low on entering 2023. I saw him as a more talented version of the boom-or-bust WRs like Gabe Davis, which is not the worst thing in the world. But I did not think he had the versatility to combine consistent targets with his highlight reel catches.

He proved me wrong during Johnson’s absence, but Johnson has proven since his return that he is the better WR at this stage in their careers. After a “training wheels” 61% snap share in his first game back in Week 7, which he still turned into five catches for 79 yards, Johnson was on the field for 91% of the Steelers’ offensive snaps in Week 8. He earned 14 targets (Pickens had five) for a 35% target share. He did only catch eight balls for 85 yards, but Kenny Pickett left the game with an injury giving way to Mitch Trubisky. The Steelers face the 25th-ranked Titans at home in Week 9 and Johnson is a must-start for me.

Demario Douglas (WR41)
Opponent: WAS
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 32nd

This is a deeper cut but Demario Douglas has been trending in the right direction for the Patriots, and he was doing so before Kendrick Bourne tore his ACL in Week 8. Before Week 6, a game in which Douglas did not play, his highest single-game snap share was 41% and he averaged just over three targets per game. In the two games since Week 6, Douglas has seen a 62% and 77% snap share and 6.5 targets per game.

His snap share will likely be higher in Week 9 with Bourne out for the season, and the Patriots face the Commanders, currently the best matchup for fantasy WRs. I would not advise starting Douglas in shallower leagues or getting cute and starting him over anyone in the Top 24. But at only 18% rostered in Yahoo leagues and four teams on bye, he is a decent option as a WR3 or flex, and I see him exceeding the WR41 rank.

Week 9: Not Great, Bob – WR Matchups to Avoid

Jakobi Meyers (WR24)
Opponent: NYG
Opponent Rank vs. WR: 7th

After going three straight games with a TD, Jakobi Meyers had one catch on only one target in Week 8. Under normal circumstances, I would chalk that up to a bad game, but circumstances are not normal in Las Vegas. Outside of Josh Jacobs, the Raiders’ offense was a mess in Week 8 against the Lions. And the Raiders’ top brass had seen enough as both Josh McDaniels (head coach) and David Ziegler (general manager) were fired, and interim coach Antonio Pierce (who had been the linebackers coach) wasted no time in benching Jimmy Garoppolo and naming rookie Aidan O’Connell the starter moving forward.

I cannot argue with any of these decisions, and I think the Raiders will be better for it in the long run. And while there is always the chance a shake-up of this magnitude in the middle of the season will spark something in this team, I am not counting on it in Week 9, especially against a defense as hot as the Giants are right now.

It can be easy to downgrade an entire team based on how putrid the Giants’ offense has been, but their defense has been lights out as of late. After their Week 5 blowout loss to the Dolphins, the Giants have given up 14 points to the Bills, seven points to the Commanders, and 13 points to the Jets. Over the last three games the Giants have held WR groups 7.3 points below their average (POA allowed: -7.3) and even if you increase the sample size to the last five games, they have a POA allowed of -5.1. I am avoiding Meyers this week if possible.

Week 9 Fantasy Football Running Back Matchups

The following RB table shows the top 50 RBs for Week 9 (according to RotoBaller; PPR), opponent, and opponent rank versus fantasy RBs.

This chart also includes my rankings for RB points from receiving output only (PFR). The PFR ranks are included next to the overall RB ranks. What we are looking for with that side-by-side inclusion are discrepancies that may change the outlook of a matchup (depending on the RB).

Currently, the notable differences include the following:

  • The Panthers rank 23 spots better versus RB PFR than overall RB, ranking seventh in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Jonathan Taylor and Zack Moss.
  • The Packers are 14 spots better versus RB PFR than overall RB, ranking 11th in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Darrell Henderson Jr. and Royce Freeman, although neither are proficient pass-catchers.
  • The Giants are 11 spots better versus RB PFR than overall RB, ranking as the third-toughest matchup in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. Impacted players: Josh Jacobs. It is not the best matchup for Jacobs this week as the Giants rank as the 11th-toughest for fantasy RBs overall. But Jacobs is an auto-start most weeks, including this one.
  • The Falcons are 10 spots worse versus RB PFR than overall RB, ranking 20th in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. The Falcons rank 10th versus RBs overall but can be beaten by RBs through the air. Impacted players: None. Neither Alexander Mattison nor Cam Akers rely on much in the way of receiving output for their fantasy points.
  • The Patriots are 11 spots worse versus RB PFR than overall RB, ranking 17th in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs via PFR. The Patriots rank seventh versus RBs overall but are a softer matchup for pass-catching RBs. Impacted players: Brian Robinson Jr. (Antonio Gibson is no longer fantasy-relevant).
  • The Buccaneers have been stout against fantasy RBs ranking as the second-toughest matchup according to my fantasy points allowed system. They rank 13 spots worse (15th) versus RB PFR. Impacted players: Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary. However, the Buccaneers’ discrepancy is largely due to them already being such a brutal matchup for RBs overall. This is still a bad matchup for both Texans’ RBs even with Tampa Bay’s middle-of-the-pack ranking versus RB PFR.

Here is the chart showing these rank differences more clearly:

Now onto Week 9 RB matchups I love.

Week 9: RB Matchups We Love

Joe Mixon (RB12)
Opponent: BUF
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 28th
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 28th

Typically I do not include players already ranked in the Top 12 at their position on this list, but I felt the need with Joe Mixon. The Bills’ defense was an elite unit entering the season, and in the early stages, they were a matchup to avoid across the board. But after a slew of injuries, not only has that changed, but they are now a matchup to seek out, especially for RBs. The Bills are currently the fifth-easiest matchup for RBs overall and for RB PFR, which should allow for a big game for Mixon.

While Mixon is not threatening to lead the NFL in RB target share, he does lead the NFL in RB opportunity share, meaning when a Bengals RB gets a hand-off or passing target, it will go to Mixon at least 80% of the time. The Bills’ dual-28th rank versus RBs and RB PFR is even more significant for a bell-cow RB like Mixon.

Darrell Henderson Jr. (RB31)
Opponent: @GB
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 25th
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 11th

I am not exactly sure what is leading to Darrell Henderson Jr. being ranked behind Royce Freeman. In the two games they have shared the Rams’ backfield, Henderson Jr. has out-carried Freeman 30-21 and has seen five targets to Freeman’s zero. Freeman’s snap share was slightly higher in Week 8, but Henderson Jr. is the RB you want in this backfield. The Rams travel to Green Bay in Week 9 to face a Packers team that ranks 25th in adjusted fantasy points allowed to the RB position. And while they have been much better against RB PFR, they have also been much better against the pass than the run. The Packers rank in the Top 10 versus both fantasy QBs and WRs. And if that was not enough to tip the scales toward the run game, Matthew Stafford has already been ruled out for Week 9. The Rams will likely rely heavily on both Henderson Jr. and Freeman, with the former being the fantasy winner on the day.

Week 9: Not Great Bob, RB Matchups to Avoid

Tony Pollard (RB16)
Opponent: @PHI
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 1st
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 9th

Tony Pollard has already been disappointing, to say the least in 2023. Being the overall RB16 at 14 PPR points per game might not seem overly disappointing, but it is when viewed through the cost of acquisition lens, which was a Top 6 RB in most cases. Add to that the fact that the first three games did a lot of the heavy lifting for Pollard’s season-long 14 PPG and you fully arrive at said disappointment.

It has been a tale of matchup strength for Pollard so far. Pollard was the RB8 in PPR PPG after the first three games. Three games against the Giants (before their defense improved), the Jets (currently 27th against RBs), and the Cardinals. Pollard then dropped to RB25 in the next two games against the Patriots and 49ers. He did have a big receiving game against the Chargers in Week 7 (six catches for 80 yards) but rushed for only 30 yards on 15 carries, and the Chargers currently rank 23rd against RBs.

The Eagles have been the toughest matchup for fantasy RBs in adjusted fantasy points allowed per game, and they are ninth against RB PFR. You likely cannot afford to sit Pollard, but expectations should be heavily tempered in this brutal matchup for an already underperforming RB.

Aaron Jones (RB19)
Opponent: LAR
Opponent Rank vs. RB: 5th
Opponent Rank vs. RB PFR: 2nd

Aaron Jones is not 100%. That much is clear. But he has been the type of RB that you start when he suits up. I advise against that this week. Jones did see his highest snap share of the season in Week 8 at 51%, but he only had 11 touches for 46 yards. AJ Dillon has been doing most of the heavy RB lifting between the tackles, with or without Jones on the field, but that has not been a deal breaker for Jones in past seasons. Jones is a good runner, but he does a lot of his damage in the passing game. And the Rams have been a terrible matchup for RB PFR. Through the air, opposing RBs have averaged 3.5 catches for 16.5 receiving yards per game against the Rams, with zero receiving TDs. And that includes games against Christian McCaffrey, D’Andre Swift, and Tony Pollard. Even if Jones were 100% there would still be a concern with this matchup.

Week 9 Fantasy Football Tight End Matchups

The following TE table shows the top 25 TEs for Week 9 (according to RotoBaller; PPR), opponent, and opponent rank versus fantasy TEs.

Week 9: TE Matchups We Love

Hunter Henry (TE19)
Opponent: WAS
Opponent Rank vs. TE: 27th

Hunter Henry was shot out of a cannon to start the 2023 season with receiving TDs in the first two games, 50+ receiving yards in three of the first four games, and a snap share north of 80% in the first month. Then he disappeared, literally, with zero catches in Week 4 against the Saints. Henry made my matchups to avoid list a few weeks ago and it was a good call. His snap share cratered at 50% in Week 7. But, he has seen three targets in each of the last three games, and caught all three in Week 8 for 28 yards, and his snap share was back up at 58%. I realize these aren't great numbers by themselves, but they show a trend back toward more involvement in this passing game. And with Kendrick Bourne out for the season, Henry’s involvement will only increase, especially against the sixth-easiest fantasy TE matchup that has allowed four TE TDs in the last four games.

Week 9: Not Great Bob, TE Matchups to Avoid

Dalton Schultz (TE10)
Opponent: TB
Opponent Rank vs. TE: 8th

After three straight games with a receiving TD, Dalton Schultz came back down to earth in Week 8 with only five yards on two catches. That was in a tough matchup with the Panthers (5th), but Schultz gets another negative matchup in Week 9 against the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay currently ranks as the eighth-toughest matchup for fantasy TEs in adjusted fantasy points allowed per game. The Buccaneers have a season-long POA allowed of -2.8 PPG and only surrendered their first TE TD to Dalton Kincaid in Week 8.

Schultz could find the endzone in Week 9 which would all but guarantee a miss on this call, but the Buccaneers have been a much friendlier matchup for fantasy WRs (25th) so it is more likely that the receiving fantasy points for the Texans will go through Nico Collins and Tank Dell.

I will finish with my “Postmortems,” looking back across each position at my Week 6 loves and “not great, Bobs” to see how I did.

Last Week's Postmortems

I am fine with being wrong about things, especially when it comes to fantasy football, where most of us are wrong more often than we are right. So, each new week, I will include a postmortem of the previous week’s players whose fantasy matchups I loved and those whom I advised to avoid. I will subjectively judge myself based on the results of the previous week, with my take either being a “HIT” or a “MISS,” or in some cases a “PUSH” (or N/A for a player who was ruled out due to injury after the article published).
