    • Bobby Weed (1989)
    • PGA Tour (2024)

Comparable Courses:

  • Colonial Country Club – Charles Schwab Challenge – RESULTS
    • Colonial Country Club is one of the strongest course comparisons for TPC River Highlands. Both venues are shorter by modern PGA TOUR standards and place a premium on precision rather than power. Players who excel with their irons, consistently find fairways, and avoid mistakes tend to thrive at both courses.
  • TPC Deere Run – John Deere Classic – RESULTS
    • Both courses allow players to attack pins and generate a high volume of birdie opportunities. Strong wedge play and efficient putting are critical, as players must capitalize on scoring chances throughout the round.
  • TPC Sawgrass (THE PLAYERS Stadium Course) – THE PLAYERS Championship – RESULTS
    • While TPC Sawgrass is significantly more difficult, both courses reward strategic golf over pure distance. Positioning off the tee, precise approach shots, and avoiding penalty areas are all critical components of success. Players who consistently perform well at Pete Dye-designed courses, particularly TPC Sawgrass, often carry those skills to TPC River Highlands, another venue that rewards thoughtful course management and accuracy.
  • Harbour Town Golf Links – RBC Heritage – RESULTS
    • Harbour Town is perhaps the most frequently cited comparison to TPC River Highlands. Neither course requires overwhelming distance, but both demand accuracy, elite iron play, and a reliable putter. Players must shape shots, position themselves properly off the tee, and take advantage of scoring opportunities when they arise.

Travelers Championship - Course/Tournament History

The Travelers Championship is one of the longest-running events on the PGA TOUR, dating back to 1952 when it was first played as the Insurance City Open. Since moving to TPC River Highlands in 1984, the tournament has become a fan favorite and one of the premier stops on the summer portion of the schedule. Since Travelers became the title sponsor in 2007, the event has continued to grow in stature and now stands as one of the TOUR's Signature Events.

TPC River Highlands, located in Cromwell, Connecticut, is a par 70 that measures just over 6,800 yards. While it is one of the shorter courses on the PGA TOUR, it consistently produces exciting finishes and rewards a different skill set than many modern venues. Distance can be helpful, but precision off the tee, strong iron play, and a hot putter are often the keys to success.

The course features tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers, several water hazards, and relatively small greens. Players who can consistently give themselves birdie opportunities while avoiding mistakes tend to separate themselves from the field.

One of the defining characteristics of TPC River Highlands is its closing stretch. The final few holes create plenty of drama, particularly the driveable par-4 15th and the reachable par-5 13th earlier in the back nine. These scoring opportunities often lead to major leaderboard swings late on Sunday and have helped produce some of the most memorable finishes on the PGA TOUR.

The tournament is also known for the annual "Umbrella Challenge" held during practice rounds. Players attempt to hit an 85-yard shot closest to a floating Travelers umbrella positioned in a pond between the 15th and 16th holes, with the winner earning a charitable donation. While largely a fun tradition, an interesting trend has emerged over the years: no winner of the challenge has gone on to win the Travelers Championship that same week.

As a Signature Event, the Travelers Championship features a limited field, a $20 million purse, and no cut. Combined with its strong history, elite field, and exciting layout, it has become one of the most anticipated non-major events on the PGA TOUR schedule.

Travelers Championship - Course Guide/ Scorecard

Originally designed by Pete Dye in 1982, TPC River Highlands is a par 70 layout featuring four par 3s, twelve par 4s, and two par 5s. Despite its modest yardage, the course has consistently produced exciting finishes and remains one of the most popular stops on the PGA TOUR schedule.

The course has undergone several renovations and restoration projects throughout its history. Bobby Weed oversaw significant updates in 1989, helping shape much of the layout players see today. More recently, the PGA TOUR completed additional enhancements in 2024, including a renovation of the No. 2 green complex and the construction of a new tee box on the par-4 third hole. While the green surface itself was not altered, the changes were designed to improve strategy and maintain the course's challenge for modern professionals.

TPC River Highlands measures just 6,844 yards, making it the second-shortest course on the PGA TOUR schedule. However, length is far from the primary defense. The course demands precision off the tee, with fairways that are narrower than the TOUR average and rough that can quickly punish inaccurate drives. Players who consistently position the ball in the fairway gain a significant advantage when attacking the small green complexes.

The greens are one of the defining characteristics of the course. Averaging approximately 5,000 square feet, they are the third-smallest putting surfaces players will encounter all season. As a result, approach play becomes extremely important, as does a player's ability to scramble when greens are missed. The combination of small targets and subtle undulation places a premium on precision throughout the bag.

Bunkers are present but are not the primary defense of the golf course. TPC River Highlands features just 68 bunkers, ranking among the courses with the fewest on TOUR. Instead, much of the challenge comes from positioning, angles into greens, and avoiding costly mistakes around the property.

Water hazards are only in play on five holes, but they become increasingly important as players approach the closing stretch. The risk-reward nature of holes such as the drivable par-4 15th and the demanding finishing holes creates plenty of volatility late in rounds.

Travelers Championship - Notable Par 3s

TPC River Highlands’ par 3s range from 158 to 223 yards, with two falling in the 200-225 yard range. Last year, all of the par 3s had a scoring average over par except for Hole No. 5.

Hole 8 | Par 3 | 202 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 3.05 (Difficulty Rank - 6)

Judging the wind correctly is extremely important on this picturesque par 3. The trees that border the left side of the hole hinder the player’s ability to calculate wind strength and direction. Trust in their club selection will be critical in order to play this hole well.

Hole 16 | Par 3 | 171 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 3.083 (Difficulty Rank - 3)

This scenic par 3 requires a well-struck mid iron to clear the forced carry over water and stop the ball on the narrow green. The green has a lot of slope in it and pin locations can be difficult.

Travelers Championship - Notable Par 4s

There are twelve Par 4s at TPC River Highlands, with the majority of those holes ranging between 400 and 450 yards. No. 15 is the shortest, listed at 296 yards, with the longest being No. 4, playing 481 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest par 4 at the Travelers Championship was the 4th hole.

Hole 15 | Par 4 | 296 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 3.691 (Difficulty Rank - 16)

One of the most exciting holes on the PGA TOUR, the 296-yard hole No. 15 at TPC River Highlands forces players to make good decisions. There is water to the left and sand to the right. Anywhere from a 2 to 6 can be recorded on a player’s scorecard when walking off this green.

Hole 17 | Par 4 | 431 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 4.054 (Difficulty Rank - 5)

Intimidation takes on a new meaning when standing on the tee box at No. 17. Players must fit their shot between the large lake that covers the entire right side and the difficult fairway bunker on the left. A good drive is just the first part to leaving this hole with a par. The approach shot will need to carry the water the entire way, and with any wind, club selection is of most importance. Crowds are huge on this hole because they know it can be the breaking point in the tournament.

Hole 18 | Par 4 | 444 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 3.968 (Difficulty Rank - 10)

An absolute perfect finishing hole that allows players to make birdie if they play the hole well. At 444 yards, a good drive leaves a mid- to short-iron approach to a green surrounded by spectators.

Travelers Championship - Notable Par 5s

There are only two Par 5s on the course: No. 6 and No. 13. These were the only two holes that had a scoring average under par in 2025. Hole No. 6 was the easiest hole on the course last season.

Hole 6 | Par 5 | 574 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 4.629 (Difficulty Rank - 18)

Players have a great scoring opportunity on this dogleg right par 5. Only the longest hitters can reach this green in two shots, however a good wedge shot from inside 100 yards can make birdie a real possibility.

Hole 13 | Par 5 | 523 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 4.669 (Difficulty Rank - 17)

At 523 yards, most professionals in the Travelers Championship will be able to reach this par 5 in two shots. Accuracy is required, with water to the right and out of bounds to the left off the tee, and water in front of the green with out of bounds lurking left. Players who don’t go for the green in two will have to lay up on the right-hand side of the fairway.

Featured/ Signature Hole(s): 15-18

Travelers Championship - Key Statistics

Strokes Gained: Off the Tee

TPC River Highlands is one of the shorter courses on the PGA TOUR, but that does not mean players can ignore the driver. Positioning off the tee is critical, as many holes feature doglegs, fairway bunkers, and water hazards that force players to think strategically. Players who can combine distance with accuracy will set themselves up for the ideal approach angles into the small greens.

Strokes Gained: Approach

Approach play remains one of the most important statistics this week. With greens averaging approximately 5,000 square feet, players must be precise with their irons to consistently create birdie opportunities.

Strokes Gained: Around the Green

Even the best ball strikers will miss greens throughout the week. Players who can save par around these small putting surfaces will avoid costly mistakes and keep momentum on their side.

Strokes Gained: Putting (Poa Annua/ Bentgrass)

The greens at TPC River Highlands feature a Bentgrass/Poa Annua blend. With winning scores regularly pushing beyond 15-under par, converting birdie opportunities is essential. Players who have historically putted well on this grass combination deserve extra consideration.

Strokes Gained: Total (Pete Dye)

Although TPC River Highlands has undergone several renovations since Pete Dye's redesign, many of his strategic elements remain. Players who consistently perform well on Pete Dye layouts often find success here thanks to the emphasis on positioning, shot-making, and course management.

Strokes Gained: Tee to Green (Length less than 7,200 yards)

TPC River Highlands is one of the shortest courses players will see all season. Rather than relying solely on power, the course rewards complete tee-to-green performance. Players who excel on shorter, positional layouts tend to thrive here.

Good Drives Gained %

Accuracy is important, but Good Drives Gained provides a better picture of who is consistently putting themselves in position to score. Whether by finding the fairway or successfully advancing the ball after a miss, players who rank highly in this category tend to generate more birdie opportunities.

Driving Accuracy

While distance can provide an advantage, avoiding trouble is often more important at TPC River Highlands. Water hazards, fairway bunkers, and overhanging trees can quickly turn a birdie opportunity into a scrambling situation.

Scrambling %

Birdies are plentiful at the Travelers Championship, but saving par remains important. Players who can consistently get up and down after missed greens will avoid dropping shots and keep pace in what is often a low-scoring event.

Greens in Regulation %

With relatively small greens and a premium on iron play, players who consistently find the putting surface gain a significant advantage. More greens hit means more birdie opportunities and fewer stressful recovery shots.

Par 3 Scoring: 201-225 Yards

Two of the four par 3s fall within this range, making long-iron performance an important factor. Players who excel from this distance can quietly gain strokes on the field.

    Par 4 Scoring/ Par 4 Scoring: 401-450 Yards

Seven of the twelve par 4s at TPC River Highlands measure between 400 and 450 yards. Success on these holes is often one of the biggest indicators of who will contend on Sunday.

    Par 5 Scoring

There are only two par 5s on the scorecard, making them critical scoring opportunities. Players who take advantage of these holes can gain valuable ground on the field.

    Birdies or Better %

The Travelers Championship routinely produces low winning scores. Four of the last five champions have finished at 15-under par or lower, making Birdies or Better Percentage one of the most important scoring metrics to evaluate.

    Proximity Gained: 125-175 Yards

A large percentage of approach shots at TPC River Highlands come from the 125-175 yard range. Players who excel with their short and mid-irons should create more birdie chances throughout the week.
