Will Brian Robinson Jr. Play in Week 1? Fantasy Football Outlook and Update

Brian Robinson Jr. - Jayden Daniels - Fantasy Football Rankings, NFL Injury News, DFS Lineup Picks

Will Brian Robinson Jr. play in Week 1? When will Robinson play for the 49ers in 2025? John breaks down the latest Brian Robinson Jr. news for fantasy football.

The Washington Commanders just recently traded their starting running back over the past two seasons, Brian Robinson Jr., to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Robinson has played just three seasons in the NFL and is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Now, he'll join a team with more competition for him in the backfield. Obviously, the starter will remain the elite RB Christian McCaffrey, who's (supposedly) fully healthy. Additionally, San Francisco's RB2 last season, Isaac Guerendo (shoulder), performed very well when playing in relief for McCaffrey.

This raises questions about Robinson's role this season. Guerendo was highly efficient in his starts, and McCaffrey is the unquestioned workhorse back of this team. So is Robinson set to play this season? What about Week 1? And what does his fantasy football outlook look like?

Will Brian Robinson Play In 2025?

It doesn't seem like he was traded for to sit on the bench all season, but there's a chance Guerendo returns to full health, McCaffrey plays the whole season without getting hurt, and Robinson doesn't see the field much, if at all. The 49ers are a team regularly decimated by injuries, though.

Historically, they're one of the most injured teams in the NFL. This could be due to the training staff's approach or the coaching staff's stubbornness in keeping their starters in the game, even when they are physically unable to play, which risks more injuries.

The most likely reason the team traded for Robinson is that every other RB they have not named McCaffrey on the roster seems to be hurt. The rookie the team drafted, RB Jordan James (finger), had to have finger surgery. Corey Kiner (ankle) is on injured reserve. In addition, Guerendo has a shoulder ailment, and Patrick Taylor Jr. (shoulder) was placed on season-ending injured reserve.

This currently means Robinson and McCaffrey are the only healthy running backs on the roster. They have at least some depth now, and Robinson is competent enough to take a significant workload and at least produce modest numbers with it, as he did with the Commanders in previous seasons.

Will Brian Robinson Jr. Play In Week 1?

If McCaffrey doesn't get hurt, we might still see Robinson take a handful of carries. The big question is whether the duo of Robinson and Guerendo will serve as a committee, or if Guerendo will retain his clear RB2 role and take most of the touches if McCaffrey goes down. It seems likely, though, that Robinson is in line for at least minimal work.

There's an incentive to keep Guerendo healthy, though San Francisco doesn't exactly have a history of doing that. Reason dictates that they'd want to make sure he doesn't aggravate his shoulder injury, but he appeared to do just that when inexplicably assigned to do kickoff coverage on special teams in the 49ers' last preseason game.

There are rumors that Guerendo won't play in Week 1. The 49ers are known to play their players through injuries that quickly get re-aggravated, though. We'll have to wait for more clarity on this situation.

Brian Robinson Jr. Fantasy Football Outlook

As long as McCaffrey remains healthy, there is minimal upside here. Even when up multiple scores or on third downs when it would be plausible to give McCaffrey a bit of a rest, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan insists on giving him the ball as much as possible.

Yet the team keeps doing it, and they're consistently one of the most injured teams in the league. Aliments have cost them production from key players in the biggest games, but they haven't seemed to change. Whatever role Robinson would have had with the Commanders isn't about to come to pass in San Francisco.

The offensive philosophy is unlikely to change, given Shanahan's success with it so far. Robinson thus has become little more than a handcuff for McCaffrey, with dubious value even at that, as he could back up Guerendo in case of a McCaffrey injury.

We hope you haven't already drafted Robinson, but if you have, he's at least worth a bench stash in deeper leagues. The most likely scenario every week, though, is that he scores very little and isn't worth ever putting in your starting lineup.
