Who Will Win Between Brazil and Switzerland? 2022 World Cup Match Preview

The World Cup is finally here. A few months later than normal but here nonetheless. The team at RotoBaller has you covered for all your World Cup needs. We'll bring you DFS articles, game previews, and betting picks throughout the competition.

On the ninth day of group play, we preview the matchup between the two leaders of Group G: Brazil and Switzerland. Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0 in their World Cup opener, highlighted by Richarlison's incredible goal. Switzerland squeaked past Cameroon with a 1-0 win. Kickoff between the Brazilians and Swiss takes place on Monday, November 28th at 11 AM EST. Who will win between Brazil and Switzerland?

Brazil Team Breakdown

Brazil was consistently strong throughout their tournament opener against Serbia, but at what cost? The Brazilians lost their superstar playmaker Neymar and starting right-back Danilo for the remainder of group play due to injury. Real Madrid's Éder Militão is expected to fill in for Danilo, whereas veteran midfielder Fred is one of the main candidates to replace Neymar. Brazil fired off 23 shots and possessed the ball 59% of the match against Serbia.

Strengths: Brazil loses their attack's focal point with the loss of Neymar, but the talent they have up top is unmatched. Richarlison, Vinícius Jr., and Raphinha are a threatening trio that few back lines can keep in front of. Though the loss of Danilo hurts, Brazil's defense is hard to break. Thiago Silva and Marquinhos are some of the tournament's most reliable defenders, and Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. There are few teams as complete as Brazil.

Weaknesses: Without Neymar, the Brazilian attack loses its stability. The nation's second-leading scorer of all-time plays such an imperative role at center attacking mid and a large portion of Brazil's opportunities are facilitated through him. Nobody can replace Neymar's masterful skill and decision-making. Without the head of their attack, Brazil will struggle to consistently create quality chances. Also, Brazil's outside backs completed more passes than anyone on the team in their first game. Militão needs to be precise and not commit any costly turnovers in his World Cup debut.

Switzerland Team Breakdown

Switzerland played in one of the most competitive opening-round matches last week against Cameroon. The Swiss, ranked 15th in the world by FIFA, demanded the world's respect in soccer when they upended reigning world champions France in the UEFA Euro in June of 2021. They are one of the most experienced teams in the World Cup and have great chemistry. When they're playing at their best, they can beat anyone.

Strengths: Yann Sommer kept a clean sheet against Cameroon, saving all five shots on target. Sommer, making his 79th cap for Switzerland, plays his best when representing his country and is one of the best keepers in the world. Captain Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri have been the premier Swiss players for years now and flash their past when it matters most. Switzerland made a deep run in the Euro and their chemistry gives them an edge over anyone in the tournament.

Weaknesses: Switzerland lacks an elite goalscorer to depend on every game. Breel Embolo bagged his 12th career goal for Switzerland in their World Cup opener. Shaqiri is not the offensive weapon he once was, but he does show up when it counts most. The Swiss will need to take advantage of any opportunity they can get against the tournament favorites. It's an unknown who can put one past Alisson, someone will need to rise to the occasion.

Brazil vs. Switzerland Preview

If Serbia and Cameroon tie, the winner of this game would punch their ticket into the knockout stage. Regardless, a win here would practically clinch an appearance in the round of 16. Brazil is combating two important losses in their lineup, whereas Switzerland looks to build off a promising tournament-opening result. A loss here could crush Brazil's confidence in making a title run.

Brazil's squad is deep and talented enough to overcome the losses in their starting eleven. On the contrary, Switzerland is experienced and intelligent enough to exploit Brazil's weaknesses. Given how composed the Swiss looked in their game against Cameroon, I expect another competitive match. I think talent will prevail at the end of the day, but this game can go both ways.

Score prediction: Brazil 1 - 0 Switzerland
