Should I drop Dylan Sampson for fantasy football Week 4? Is Dylan Sampson a safe player to cut? Read the fantasy football waivers outlook.
Cleveland Browns running back Dylan Sampson made a big impact in the first game of his career, as he touched the ball 20 times and gained 93 yards from scrimmage in the Browns' loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
But since then, he's been a non-factor. His production has declined in each subsequent week, and the emergence of Quinshon Judkins has introduced competition into the Browns’ running back room.
That said, Sampson was an intriguing rookie prospect, and he has only played in three games. He still has the chance to emerge later in the season. But is he worth clogging a bench spot? Let’s take a look!

Should I Drop Dylan Sampson in Fantasy Football?
Sampson was heavily utilized in Week 1. He led the team in both rushing and receiving. His 12 carries were twice as many as the second-leading rusher. His reception total of eight was one more than Harold Fannin, and his yardage total of 64 was just two shy of leading receiver Jerry Jeudy.
However, despite the heavy volume, his efficiency left something to be desired. He only gained 29 yards on the ground for an abysmal 2.42 yards per carry. That’s especially disappointing considering that the Bengals have a weak defense. The Minnesota Vikings averaged 5.5 yards per rush against Cincy, and Jordan Mason went for 7.3 per rush on 16 carries.
Fellow rookie Judkins joined the active roster in Week 2 and immediately began outplaying Sampson. In two games, Judkins has run for 155 yards on 28 carries, good for an average of 5.5. He's also earned more targets and made more receptions than Sampson.
With the Browns having an ineffective offense, none of their running backs will have many opportunities to score touchdowns. The Browns are tied for No. 26, averaging a dismal 1.7 trips to the end zone per game, after three weeks.
The Browns’ offensive line is below average, which certainly doesn’t help their running backs, either. Even with that caveat, Sampson is playing worse than Judkins and Jerome Ford.
Sampson is only averaging 2.18 yards after contact per attempt, compared to Judkins’ 5.14 yards after contact per attempt. In three games, Sampson has never busted off a 10-plus-yard run. Judkins has broken off three runs for over 10 yards.
Who Should I Pickup for Fantasy Football?
A number of running backs would be better options than Sampson. Priority waiver wire adds include the Arizona Cardinals’ Trey Benson, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Bhayshul Tuten, and the L.A. Rams’ Blake Corum.
Benson will likely take over as the Cardinals’ clear starter now that James Conner is out for the season with a foot injury. He has been quite productive this season, averaging 6.0 yards per carry, and now he will have more opportunities to score touchdowns, too.
Corum has seen his role expand, having more attempts and gaining more yards in subsequent games. While he is still not getting a starter’s workload, he has averaged 7.1 yards per carry on 14 attempts.
Tuten has been more up and down, but overall, his volume and efficiency are both superior to Sampson's. As a rookie who was drafted by the new coach and general manager in Duval County, Tuten has a clear role on the Jaguars for the next couple of years. He has scored a touchdown in each of the past two games.
