The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the WGC & Barracuda. Here are some under the radar plays and picks for this week's event.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

I don't think many folks are doing cartwheels over their 3M Open results, as it was a tough tournament in a lot of respects. The boys and I fared just ok, with Josh scoring a nice result from Tony Finau, Spencer missing the cut with Bubba Watson, and me landing somewhere in the middle with a ho-hum outing from my contrarian selection Sam Burns.

We all hope to get in the groove this week, as we head to Memphis, TN for a high-paying WGC event. In addition to the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, we'll also be tossing out our picks for the Barracuda Championship...an event that apparently just decided to run the 3M Open back without the 15 best players from last week's field. Let's see who the guys are rolling with in this pivotal week!

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

One and Done Selections - WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational & Barracuda Championship

Joe Nicely - Daniel Berger (WGC)

Alternate - Jason Day 

This is undoubtedly a pivotal week in OAD contests, as the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and its huge payday has the potential to shake up the standings. This is a truly elite field and it feels like an "elite" player will emerge victorious from Memphis. However, I'm going a little off the board this week with Daniel Berger, a player that's been consistently great both in 2020 and on this TPC Southwind layout. After battling injuries for over a year, Berger has come back with a vengeance this season and bested an all-star field in the PGA Tour's return from the COVID-19 hiatus at Colonial. He won back-to-back titles on this TPC Southwind golf course in 2016-17 and has a chance to insert himself back into the "elite" conversation with another victory this week. -Joe Nicely

Ryan Moore (Barracuda)

Alternate - Cameron Davis

Lots of unknowns in the 'Cuda this week, both when it comes to the players in the field and a brand-new host course in Jack Nicklaus' Old Greenwood layout. While this field is weaker than last week's 3M Open (I know, I know) there are still several guys that we're familiar with like Richy Werenski, Patrick Rodgers, Talor Gooch, and Cameron Davis. All those fellas were in serious consideration for me, but I elected to go with a veteran that's been through the ups and downs on the PGA Tour, Nevada native Ryan Moore. He's notoriously streaky (when he even bothers to play) and he looked very sharp last week in Minnesota, so I'm gonna try and ride the hot hand with the 37-year-old that has won five times on the PGA Tour.

Spencer Aguiar - Collin Morikawa (WGC)

Alternate - Jon Rahm

I've struggled with what to do with my selection at the WGC. The 'One and Done' nature of this contest can be perplexing since it magnifies poor choices by taking golfers out of your player pool for the rest of the season - whether you are right or wrong in your decision.

From a real-life standpoint, I think Rory McIlroy gets the job done at TPC Southwind, but things change in my mind when viewing this as a be-all and end-all consequence. McIlroy has failed to post a top-10 since the restart, and the more significant concern comes down to the fact that he hasn't cracked the top-30 in three of his four starts. At the end of the day, I'd rather support McIlroy at 12/1 in the outright market and live with the result, as opposed to tying myself to the best player in the world when he hasn't quite clicked as of late. I get one shot at him, and I want to make sure it comes at the right time. If the Irishman wins, I have to live with that decision for this particular situation, but I have enough skin the game from other avenues to be okay with my final choice.

Unfortunately, I am not so sure I have a natural pivot at my disposal. I recently burned Xander Schauffele at the Memorial and fell short with Justin Thomas during the first WGC of the year - taking away two golfers who would have been on my shortlist in Memphis. I am fully aware that Joe and Josh will come out guns blazing with double-barreled shotguns ready for war, but I'm not quite prepared to go into this three-way battle with Jon Rahm versus the likes of Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy when I have other locations that make sense for the Spaniard. If I am trying to win this contest from a strategical aspect, I think my best decision is to keep some bullets in my back pocket by rolling out Collin Morikawa. That gives me my best kick coming down the stretch, and the goal is to have enough horsepower left in the tank to chase down whoever is in the lead. And who knows, perhaps Morikawa provides one of his ridiculous ball-striking displays and wins this going away. -Spencer Aguiar

Sam Burns (Barracuda)

Alternate - Cameron Davis

It was a close call between Sam Burns and Cameron Davis, but Burns' consistency mixed with his scoring ability was enough to seal the deal for me. I have Burns ranked number one on my Barracuda model, which stems from his top-seven ranking compared to the field in strokes gained off the tee, driving distance and par-five scoring. Add to that his ability to create eagle opportunities, and his overall skill set is too robust to ignore for this condensed field.

It is worth noting that Burns closed last week priced 33/1 in the 3M Open - the same number he opened for the Barracuda. We can argue that last week's total was overinflated, but this is a prime example of the previous week's chalk not receiving the respect they deserve in the following event after a mediocre result. Burns is going to win soon on tour and will get his first real shot to do so at Tahoe Mountain Club.

Josh Bennett - Rory McIlroy (WGC)

Alternate - Brooks Koepka

Rory isn’t in the greatest form since the season restarted, but he’s one of the best in the world and cold streaks like this are just going to run out eventually for players like him. They also haven’t played any courses where his length will be a significant advantage like it will be this week, so he can still have a little bit of an off week and keep in contention. He’s proven that to be true in the past as well with a handful of top 10 finishes in this event to go along with a win. He’s had some time off to regroup and this is the week for him to break out of his “slump” and get back to tearing up the tour (I hope). - Josh Bennett

Denny McCarthy (Barracuda)

Alternate - Will Gordon

Admittedly, I know nothing about this event, and the part where you want a high score instead of a low score confuses me. Aside from that, what I do know is to get a high score you have to get a lot of birdies, and I know that Denny McCarthy is in the top 25 in birdie or better percentage this season and was top 15 in that statistic for 2019. This guy knows how to put circles on his scorecard, so if that’s the name of the game this week, that’s the guy I’m going with.
