5 hours agoThe Atlanta Braves acquired right-handed reliever Joe Jimenez from the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday evening in exchange for outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and left-hander Jake Higginbotham. The Braves need some more bullpen reinforcements after closer Kenley Jansen left in free agency to sign with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Jimenez had a solid year in Detroit last year, posting a 3.49 ERA (1.09 WHIP), a 1.09 WHIP, two saves and 77 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings pitched. With Jansen gone in Atlanta in 2023, Raisel Iglesias figures to open the year as the set closer for the Braves, with Jimenez operating in more of a middle-relief role in his new digs. MLB Pipeline is already listing Malloy as the Tigers' No. 7 prospect. The 22-year-old started the year at High-A and finished at Triple-A and clubbed 17 home runs in the Braves farm system in 2022.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Braves Twitter

5 hours agoThe San Diego Padres agreed to an 11-year, $280 million deal with free-agent shortstop Xander Bogaerts on Wednesday night. It comes after Trea Turner scored an 11-year, $300 million deal from the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Bogaerts has been an All-Star in three of the last four seasons and was extremely productive yet again in 2022 for the Boston Red Sox, slashing .307/.377/.456 with an .833 OPS, 15 home runs, 73 RBI, 84 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 150 games. The power drop from 23 to 15 homers has to be a bit concerning, though, as he enters his 30s. He'll have plenty of chances to drive in and score runs in a loaded Padres lineup, however. The addition of Bogaerts officially means the Padres are prepared to move star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. to the outfield.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Jon Heyman

9 hours agoThe Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox are among the teams that have shown the most interest in free-agent shortstop Dansby Swanson so far this offseason. Swanson's hometown Atlanta Braves are also in the mix to re-sign him if he so chooses. The Twins and Red Sox are probably interested as a fallback option in case they can't re-sign Carlos Correa and Xander Bogaerts, respectively. It's likely that Swanson won't sign with a team until after Correa and Bogaerts do. The 28-year-old is considered inferior offensively to both Correa and Bogaerts, but Swanson has clubbed 52 home runs and driven in 184 runs in the last two years in Atlanta while slashing .263/.321/.448. He's no slouch with the bat in his hands.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Mark Bowman

10 hours agoSix teams still need a shortstop and are all talking to free-agent shortstop Xander Bogaerts at the Winter Meetings in San Diego this week. The Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs are among them. Bogaerts opted out of the final three years of his deal with Boston, but they've had some momentum in trying to re-sign him on a day in which they also added veteran closer Kenley Jansen and Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshida. Keeping the 30-year-old All-Star shortstop would be a huge win for the Red Sox after the division-rival New York Yankees re-signed Aaron Judge to a nine-year, $360 million mega deal on Wednesday morning. Bogaerts was impressive again in 2022 and remains one of the best all-around shortstops in baseball after hitting .307 with 15 home runs, 73 RBI, 84 runs and eight steals in 150 games.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

11 hours agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates selected left-hander Jose Hernandez from the Los Angeles Dodgers with the third overall selection in Wednesday's Rule 5 draft. The rebuilding Pirates will give Hernandez a shot to stick on the club's active big-league roster in 2023. The 24-year-old southpaw pitched at High-A Great Lakes and Double-A Tulsa in 2022, going a combined 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 69 strikeouts and 25 walks in 59 2/3 innings over 51 appearances (two starts). Hernandez could be used in a different role with his new organization, but he's most likely to be stashed in the bullpen as a long-reliever next year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Pirates Twitter

11 hours agoThe Oakland Athletics selected Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Ryan Noda second overall in Wednesday's Rule 5 draft. The rebuilding A's will give Noda a shot to see if he can stick on their major-league roster in 2023. The 26-year-old was taken in the 15th round in 2017 out of the University of Cincinnati by the Toronto Blue Jays. Noda, a left-handed-hitting first baseman and corner outfielder, finished the 2022 season by hitting .259/.396/.474 with an .870 OPS, 25 home runs, 90 RBI, 86 runs scored and even 20 stolen bases in 135 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He has plenty of power (54 home runs in the last two seasons), but he'll need to cut down on his strikeouts (162 in 2022) in order to find success in the majors.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: SB Nation - Eric Stephen

11 hours agoThe Boston Red Sox agreed to a five-year deal worth more than $85 million with Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshida on Wednesday, according to sources. The posting fee for the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball will be in the $15 million range, bringing the total outlay for Yoshida to around $100 million. The 29-year-old is seen as a bit of a liability on defense, but what he lacks with his glove he is hoping to make up for with a contact-oriented approach at the plate in the States. He struck out just 8.1 percent of the time in 2022 and also slashed .335/.447/.561 with 21 home runs. Yoshida will be more of an on-base target in fantasy leagues, and he's not expected to be a world-beater in the power department.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan

11 hours agoFree-agent left-hander Cole Hamels, who is still only 38 years old, wants to pitch in 2023, according to his long-time agent John Boggs. Hamels hasn't pitched since the shortened 2020 season, when he made just one start for the Atlanta Braves and allowed three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. The four-time All-Star southpaw underwent shoulder surgery in November of 2021, but it sounds as though he's healthy and trying to take another crack at it. Hamels will have to prove that he's healthy before any team will give him a chance on what will likely be a minor-league deal with plenty of incentives. In 15 big-league seasons (10 with the Phillies), Hamels has a 3.43 ERA (3.68 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP and a 23 percent strikeout rate in 2,698 regular season innings.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

11 hours agoThe New York Mets remain involved with Japanese starting pitcher Kodai Senga, even after signing left-handed starter Jose Quintana on Wednesday. The Mets lost Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassitt from their starting rotation last season, but they've already added American League Cy Young winner Justin Verlander and Quintana this offseason. Senga exercised an opt-out clause in his contract with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks to become an international free agent this winter. The 29-year-old right-hander has been one of Nippon Professional Baseball's best pitchers in the last 11 years and possesses a 100-mph fastball and a wipeout splitter. He could look real nice as the Mets' No. 4 starter in 2023 behind Max Scherzer, Verlander and Quintana.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

12 hours agoThe New York Yankees remain in on free-agent left-hander Carlos Rodon despite re-signing superstar outfielder Aaron Judge to a monster nine-year, $360 million deal on Wednesday. The Yankees also remain interested in free-agent outfielder Andrew Benintendi or another left fielder, and they'd also like to bolster their bullpen. Rodon is easily the biggest name left on the starting-pitching market this winter after back-to-back All-Star seasons in 2021 and 2022 with the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants. The 29-year-old southpaw has finally been able to stay healthy the last two years while also limiting the free passes. A move to Yankee Stadium and the American League East would be tricky, but Rodon has become a fantasy ace.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

12 hours agoThe San Francisco Giants have spoken with free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa's representatives at the Winter Meetings in San Diego this week, according to a source. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins have also been linked to Correa this offseason. The 28-year-old declined his $35.1 million option for the 2023 season, but the Twins are all in on trying to bring him back on a multi-year deal. The shortstop market has skyrocketed after Trea Turner landed an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Correa, along with Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson, is one of the top shortstops available after hitting .291/.366/.467 with an .834 OPS, 22 home runs, 64 RBI and 70 runs scored in 522 at-bats for the Twins last year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Morosi

12 hours agoThe Washington Nationals selected Boston Red Sox right-hander Thad Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in Wednesday's Rule 5 draft. The soon-to-be 26-year-old had Tommy John surgery in 2021 but returned healthy late last season and then pitched in the Arizona Fall League. He could be a swingman in Washington's starting rotation/bullpen in 2023. Ward made 13 minor-league starts with four different teams in 2022, going 0-2 with a 2.28 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 66 strikeouts and 19 walks in 51 1/3 innings pitched. He also dealt with an oblique injury late in the season, but he was able to make four appearances (three starts) in the AFL, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits while walking six and striking out 15. The Nationals view him as a starter in the long term.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman

15 hours agoThe New York Mets have reportedly acquired relief pitcher Brooks Raley from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, according to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman. Heyman tweeted on Wednesday: "Mets acquire Brooks Raley from the Rays for Keyshawn Askew." Raley made 60 appearances for the Rays last season, logging 53 2/3 innings and posting a 2.68 ERA and a 2.74 FIP. He also turned in six saves, six holds and a win while striking out 61 batters and walking just 15 hitters. He'll give the Mets another late-inning, high-leverage option in manager Buck Showalter's bullpen.--Ben Rosener - RotoBallerSource: Jon Heyman

15 hours agoAccording to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Wednesday morning, the Seattle Mariners have reportedly signed relief pitcher Casey Sadler to a minor-league deal. The 32-year-old most recently pitched during the 2021 season, during which he logged a 0.67 ERA and a 2.48 FIP in 40.1 innings in a bullpen role for the Mariners. He also struck out 37 batters compared to just 10 walks during the 2021 season and logged 15 holds in his 42 appearances. The veteran didn't pitch in the Majors last season due to shoulder surgery, but he'll provide the American League West club with some additional bullpen depth heading into the 2023 campaign.--Ben Rosener - RotoBallerSource: Jon Heyman

15 hours agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates are reportedly interested in free-agent catcher Tucker Barnhart, per a tweet from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey on Wednesday morning. Mackey tweeted: "Per sources: Pirates have expressed interest in catcher Tucker Barnhart. Two-time Gold Glove winner has spent the bulk of his career with the Reds. Coming off down year with Detroit. Looking for bounce-back. Excellent fit." The veteran catcher previously appeared in 94 games for the Detroit Tigers in 2022, hitting .221 with a .287 on-base percentage and a home run in 308 plate appearances. As of right now, the only catching option on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster is Endy Rodriguez.--Ben Rosener - RotoBallerSource: Jason Mackey
