Ryan Thompson Earns His First Save Of The Season
Ryan Thompson closed out a wild win for the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. He came into a 4-2 game with one out and two runners on in the ninth inning after Justin Martinez gave up a home run and issued back-to-back walks. Thompson hit Pete Alonso with a pitch to load the bases, but he struck out Mark Vientos and got Jesse Winker on an RBI ground out before issuing an intentional walk to Jeff McNeil. With the bases loaded again, Thompson got Francisco Alvarez to ground out to third to end the game. He needed 21 pitches to complete his adventure, earning his first save of the year to go with three holds. He has a 4.26 ERA, 3.87 FIP, and 8.5 K/9 in his 12 2/3 innings. Martinez will likely get most of the save chances in Arizona if healthy, but if last night was a sign of a bigger issue, Thompson would be one of several candidates for save chances going forward.
