Rob Refsnyder Activated and Starting on Thursday
Rob Refsnyder (oblique) from the 10-day injured list and right-handed reliever Justin Slaten (shoulder) from the 60-day IL. To make room, the team placed first baseman Nathaniel Lowe (personal) on the paternity list and optioned lefty Jovani Moran to Triple-A Worcester. Refsnyder missed two weeks with a strained left oblique and will return Thursday to DH and bat fifth against Baltimore Orioles left-hander Cade Povich. The right-handed hitter has slashed a robust .287/.384/.521 in 112 plate appearances versus southpaws this season. Slaten is on his way back after sitting out three months with shoulder inflammation. Before the Red Sox placed him on the IL on May 29, Slaten pitched to a 3.47 ERA with a microscopic .90 WHIP, 16:7 K:BB, four holds, and three saves in 23 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old will give Boston's bullpen another competent setup man in front of shutdown closer Aroldis Chapman.
