Nestor Cortes Throws Bullpen Session Friday
2 years agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes (hamstring), who had to pull out of this year's World Baseball Classic due to a right hamstring injury, threw a bullpen session on Friday. Cortes' injury appears to be very minor, but the Yankees aren't taking any chances this early in spring training, and it was a no-brainer for him to skip the WBC. Barring any further setbacks, the 28-year-old left-hander should be good to go for Opening Day in the Yankees' starting rotation. He made his first All-Star team in 2022 with a 12-4 record, career-best 2.44 ERA (3.12 FIP), 0.92 WHIP and 26.5 percent strikeout rate in 28 starts and 158 1/3 innings pitched. The crafty southpaw doesn't throw hard and won't blow hitters away, but he could have another very nice season in 2023 if he can stay healthy.
