Max Scherzer Throws Off Mound Wednesday
4 years agoWashington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said that starting pitcher Max Scherzer (ankle) threw 40 pitches off a mound on Wednesday and had "no complaints, no issues." The three-time Cy Young winner suffered a minor sprained ankle a few weeks before spring training, so the Nationals are just easing him along in the early days of camp. Scherzer will throw another bullpen session before facing live hitters, and barring any type of setback, he'll be ready to go for Opening Day. The veteran right-hander is still a fantasy ace, but he showed signs of slowing down in 2020, sporting a 3.74 ERA -- his highest since 2012 -- and a career-high 1.38 WHIP. But the 36-year-old still had a fantastic 31.2 percent strikeout rate. He's still an ace, but one that comes with some injury concerns now.
