Justin Verlander Throws First Pitch Post-Surgery
4 years agoHouston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander (elbow) posted a video on Twitter on Wednesday throwing his first pitch after having Tommy John surgery on Sept. 30 of last year. The 2019 American League Cy Young winner isn't expected to pitch at all this season, and he will attempt to become the 10th known pitcher to come back from Tommy John surgery after having the procedure at 37 years or older. But that comeback could come somewhere other than Houston, as Verlander is set to be a free agent next offseason. The right-hander went 21-6 with a 2.58 ERA, 300 strikeouts and a 0.80 WHIP in 223 innings (34 starts) in 2019 while throwing his third career no-hitter. Verlander will be 39 years old the next time he steps foot on a mound in a real game, so fantasy managers will be forgiven for wondering if he can pick up right where he left off in 2019.
