Jose Altuve 2021 Fantasy Outlook: Limited Upside With Huge Question Marks
4 years agoWhile it was only a 48-game sample, 2020 was by far the worst year of Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve's career. He did what most fantasy players never thought possible: posted a horrible batting average (.219). He stole just two bases and hit five home runs on his way to being a player that in retrospect did not deserve to be rostered at all. The Astros second baseman also posted a career-high strikeout rate of 18.6% and an uninspiring .280 expected wOBA. While there is really no reason to expect Altuve to post another bad batting average in 2021, he is no longer an exciting fantasy hitter given his lack of steals and questions about how much power he can produce. The departure of George Springer from that lineup also does not help things in the counting-stats department. Altuve is as cheap as ever -- he's going just outside the top 100 picks -- but he seems like an utterly replaceable player that is not worthy of even that depressed price tag.
