Jorge Mateo Tests Positive For COVID-19
4 years agoSan Diego Padres infield prospect Jorge Mateo tested positive for COVID-19, according to manager Jayce Tingler. Mateo has had some loss of smell and test but is starting to feel a little better. He'll require two negative tests within 24 hours in order to join the team's workouts. The A's traded Mateo to the Padres last week and is their No. 12 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. The 25-year-old has fallen a bit in the prospect ranks, but he did hit .289/.330/.504 with 19 home runs, 78 RBI, 95 runs and 24 stolen bases in 566 plate appearances at Triple-A last season. There's lots of raw potential here, but Mateo has been very inconsistent at the minor league level. With Fernando Tatis Jr. locked in at the 6, Mateo's only path to playing time would appear to be at second base, but he might be unlikely to be ready for Opening Day now. Don't give up on him yet in dynasty leagues, and he's worth a flier in NL-only affairs for his speed.
