Giants Land Drew Gilbert in Deadline Deal With Mets
Drew Gilbert and right-handed pitchers Blade Tidwell and Jose Butto from the New York Mets on Wednesday in exchange for veteran right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman. It was a pretty big overpay by the Mets, as both Tidwell and Gilbert were ranked in the team's top-15 prospect list, per MLB Pipeline. Gilbert, 24, was a first-round pick by the Houston Astros in 2022 out of Tennessee and was previously considered a top-100 prospect. However, he hasn't exactly lived up to expectations in the minors and was hitting .246/.349/.435 with 12 home runs in 81 games at Triple-A Syracuse. Injuries have definitely played a role in Gilbert's struggles on the farm, but the Giants are hoping they can turn him around and have him be a contributor at the big-league level next season.
