Framber Valdez Ahead Of Schedule
4 years agoHouston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez (finger) has progressed to the point where he is ready to start facing hitters, according to pitching coach Brent Strom. The left-hander fractured his left ring finger in his first start of spring training on March 2 but avoided surgery and is ahead of schedule. He's been throwing off a mound in West Palm Beach, Fla. and "is way ahead of schedule," according to Strom. Valdez is throwing fastballs, curveballs and some changeups off the mound. Strom thinks the lefty will need two or three outings facing hitters to build up his arm strength and pitch count, but he could rejoin the Astros rotation if he can throw five innings in Florida. The 27-year-old broke out last year with a 3.57 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 11 games (10 starts). Continue to stash him everywhere, and if he was dropped, pick him up immediately.
