Corbin Burnes' Changeup Standing Out
4 years agoMilwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes drew praise from catcher Omar Narvaez in spring camp because of his improved changeup. "I think it's a big weapon for him this year," Narvaez said. The hard-throwing right-hander posted a 2.11 ERA in his breakout in 2020, and it was backed up by a 2.99 xFIP and a 3.18 xERA, and an improved changeup should only help his cause in 2021. Opponents hit .425 with an .823 slugging percentage against his four-seam fastball in 2019 and walloped 17 home runs against him in 49 innings. Burnes relied more on a sinker/cutter combination last year and was highly effective. The 26-year-old had a 36.7 percent strikeout rate and has more upside remaining as a low-end second starter for fantasy managers this season.
