Recent Fantasy Football Running Back News
Dylan Sampson, Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns rookie running back Dylan Sampson was the first running back on the field in his team's final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Sampson got the first handoff of the game from starting quarterback Joe Flacco and finished his day with two carries for three yards and one reception for 14 yards.
Veteran running back Jerome Ford split reps with Sampson during the team's second offensive series. With running back Quinshon Judkins still unsigned following his offseason arrest, Sampson and Ford should be expected to share the Browns' backfield workload early in the season. If Sampson can emerge as the clear RB1 in Cleveland with a strong start to his rookie campaign, he could be a steal in the late rounds of fantasy drafts.
Jaydon Blue, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue (ankle) suffered a low-ankle sprain on Friday, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The rookie running back told reporters after the game that he was not overly concerned and hopeful to be ready for Week 1. Blue is one of the more intriguing rookie running back candidates given the situation in Dallas, where his primary competition for carries are two veterans on one-year deals in Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.
Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans
Tennessee Titans running back Tyjae Spears (ankle) is currently uncertain for the season opener due to injury. A few weeks ago, Spears suffered a high ankle sprain during a preseason contest. As of this week, Spears is still in a safety boot and moving around with a scooter.
It doesn't seem like Spears is going to be ready for Week 1, but there is still some time. If he's out, Julius Chestnut and Kalel Mullings figure to operate as the backups behind Tony Pollard. Spears figures to have a significant role in the offense once he's cleared to play. Fantasy managers will need to check back for another update on his status.
Isaac Guerendo, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers running back Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) played at less than 100 percent during Saturday's preseason contest. Guerendo started the game, but re-aggravated his shoulder injury in the first quarter. Luckily, Guerendo was able to return to the game after getting looked at on the sideline.
At the moment, all signs point to Guerendo being available for the season opener. However, his fantasy value is going to take a serious hit with Brian Robinson Jr. taking over as the RB2 in San Francisco. Guerendo probably won't see significant snaps unless someone gets hurt in the backfield.
Brian Robinson Jr., San Francisco 49ers
According to Nick Wagoner, running back Brian Robinson Jr. was brought on to be the second back in San Francisco. This shouldn't come as a shock, given how well Robinson performed during his days in Washington. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said they've had their eyes on Robinson for a while and are pumped to have him in San Francisco.
The oft-injured Christian McCaffrey is going to lead the way, but Robinson appears to be second on the pecking order. That means that Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) will fall to third on the depth chart, which will hurt his overall fantasy value. Robinson is well worth a stash in fantasy leagues, given that McCaffrey has been limited to seven games or fewer in three of the last five seasons.
Ollie Gordon II, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II put the finishing touches on an impressive preseason with 43 rushing yards on eight carries on Saturday against the Jaguars. He totaled 126 rushing yards and a touchdown over his three preseason games, with three catches for 48 more yards. Gordon's fellow running backs in Miami's backfield are dealing with injuries, which could leave him more work to start the season. De'Von Achane (calf) is uncertain for the season opener, and Jaylen Wright (leg) is described as "week to week."
Gordon was a sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State, and he has stood out this preseason with his physical running style, pass protection, and work out of the backfield. He could be set for a big workload in Week 1 against the Colts, depending on the injury to Achane. Gordon is definitely worth a look towards the end of your standard-sized leagues and is a flier pick with a high ceiling coming into his rookie year.
