ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a potential running back flyer who could be a league-winner down the stretch, look no further than Los Angeles Rams rookie running back Cam Akers. It's been a disappointing year so far for the rookie second-round pick while Darrell Henderson Jr. has literally run away with the team's primary ball-carrying duties. However, there are multiple reasons to believe that Akers will hit his stride at the ideal time for fantasy owners this year.
In an interview following the Rams' Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins, head coach Sean McVey said he liked what he saw from Akers in the game, while adding, "I do have trust that he’s going to have a really good second half of the season for us." Akers had nine carries for 35 yards and a 19-yard reception in the game.
The Rams have been one of the most run-heavy offenses and one of the most successful rushing teams in the league this year. They are averaging 137.8 rushing yards per game, which is eighth in the league, but most of the teams above them are getting a big boost from rushing quarterbacks, something the Rams certainly don't get out of Jared Goff.
Akers needs to be added in all leagues of 14 teams or deeper and should be considered in more shallow leagues as well. If he can end up with around 50% of the Rams' running back touches over the final month of the season, he could be a strong RB2. If he can end up with around 75%, he has the potential to be an RB1.
