Jets running back (RB) La'Mical Perine is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup to target as a free agent addition for Week 8 of the 2020 NFL season.

ANALYSIS: New York Jets running back La'Mical Perine saw a 50/50 split on carries with Frank Gore in Week 7 against the Buffalo Bills. Perine carried the ball 11 times for 39 yards and a touchdown while Gore had 11 carries for 60 yards. However, Gore didn't see any opportunities in the passing game, whereas Perine earned three targets and had two catches for 16 yards.
This week's game was the first game in which Perine managed a 50/50 split with Gore. In Week 6, Gore had 11 carries to Perine's seven. In Week 5, Gore and Le'Veon Bell - now a member of the Kansas City Chiefs - split the work. In Week 4, with Bell injured, Gore had 13 carries to Perine's five.
Perine is averaging 3.7 yards per carry on the season, while Gore is averaging 3.6. This week's workload split could be a good indication of a changing of the guard going forward, maybe reminiscent of what Gore experienced with Devin Singletary in Buffalo last year. Gore won't be completely phased out, at last not at first, but Perine should start to see closer to 60% of the carries in the near future, giving the Jets an opportunity to learn more about what they have in their 2020 fourth-round pick.
Add Perine if you need long-term running back help in leagues of 12 teams or deeper. His next three matchups are tough. He has the Kansas City Cheifs, the New England Patriots, a bye week, and then the Los Angeles Chargers. However if he can manage well through that stretch, he could be in position for a solid finish.
