Ravens running back (RB) Gus Edwards is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup to target as a free agent addition for Week 6 of the 2020 NFL season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED: 4% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards has been a bit of a fantasy afterthought amidst the team's current running back trio, which is rounded out by No. 1 back Mark Ingram II and rookie J.K. Dobbins.
Ingram is coming off a year where he rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 15 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns. Though he's off to a slow start this year, he's still averaging 4.6 yards per carry and leads the team with 45 carries. Dobbins, meanwhile, was a second-round pick of the team this year and has been the only consistent threat in the passing game out of the backfield. He has nine catches for 73 yards on 10 targets. He's also averaging 7.9 yards per carry on the year, though he's only carried the ball 16 times.
So then where does Edwards come in?
Edwards has 11 fewer carries than Ingram this year, but he's averaging 5.6 yards per carry, continuing a trend that began his rookie year in 2018. Edwards carried the ball over 100 times in each of his first two years and averaged over five yards per carry both years - 5.2 in 2018 and 5.3 in 2019. By comparison, Ingram has only averaged over five yards per carry in a season once, when he had a 5.1 yards per carry average with the New Orleans Saints in 2016.
Simply put, there's a good chance that Edwards is the best pure rusher on an elite Ravens offense right now. Even if Dobbins sees more snaps going forward due to his passing game prowess, Edwards could similarly see an uptick in work and emerge as the team's primary ball carrier. This scenario would of course result in a decreased workload for Ingram. If this scenario were to play out, Edwards could become a solid RB2 in deep leagues, with more value in non-PPR than PPR. Add him in leagues of 14 teams or deeper and keep him stashed away as we watch how things play out in the coming weeks.
