Kevin Gausman Unsure When he Might Pitch Again
Chicago Cubs veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman (shoulder) said his left shoulder is still sore from the diving play he made at third base in the loss to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field, according to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score. Gausman is getting treatment, but he would not predict his availability to pitch in the wild-card series next week. The 35-year-old is now up in the air as an option to pitch for the Cubbies in Game 1 of the wild-card series next week against an undetermined opponent. In his final regular-season start of 2026 on Wednesday night, Gausman allowed two earned runs on six hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision. He had a 4.38 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 23 starts with the Toronto Blue Jays to begin the year before being traded to the Cubs at the deadline in early August. Gausman was not quite as good in nine starts with Chicago, going 4-2 with a 4.83 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 57:11 K:BB in 50 1/3 innings pitched.

Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said on Thursday that right-hander Sandy Alcantara will not make one more start this weekend against the division-rival Atlanta Braves, according to Stephen Strom. Ceddanne Rafaela Undergoing MRI Exam on his Hamstring
Boston Red Sox outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela (hamstring) is undergoing an MRI exam on Thursday on his injured right hamstring, manager Chad Tracy told Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. In his return from a quadriceps injury on Wednesday that had landed him on the injured list, Rafaela was pulled from the contest against the Cleveland Guardians with tightness in his right hamstring. The Red Sox are hoping it was just a cramping issue, but we will know for sure at some point on Thursday. If Rafaela can return before the end of the weekend, he will have a chance to set a new career high in home runs.

Xavier Edwards Remains Out of Marlins' Lineup
Miami Marlins middle infielder Xavier Edwards (thumb) continues to sit for Thursday's series finale at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, per MLB.com. Jared Serna will make the start at the keystone for the Fish and will bat eighth against Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd. Anthony Volpe Could Play Some Third Base This Week
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that shortstop/second baseman Anthony Volpe could see some playing time at third base this week, per the Talkin' Yanks podcast. Chase Burns Working on Adding a Sinker
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns (groin) was working on a sinker in his final starts before being placed on the 15-day injured list with a groin strain, per Charlie Goldsmith of the Charlie's Chalkboard Substack. Burns put together a dominant season in 2026, recording a 15-3 record with a 2.86 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 185 strikeouts across 154 1/3 innings (29 starts). However, Burns threw almost exclusively four-seam fastballs and sliders, mixing in the occasional changeup as well. Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that left-hander Shane McClanahan (forearm) is "not in play" for the team's American League Division Series roster, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Aaron Judge Plans to Play in AL Wild-Card Series

Dylan Cease Ends his Season on the Injured List
The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Wednesday that they placed right-hander Dylan Cease (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 20) with inflammation in his right shoulder and recalled right-handers Chase Lee and CJ Van Eyk from Triple-A Buffalo in corresponding moves. With the Blue Jays eliminated from postseason contention, they will shut Cease down for the final week of the regular season. The Blue Jays already announced this week that the 30-year-old All-Star will not need surgery on his shoulder, so he should be ready in plenty of time for spring training next year. Cease really liked pitching north of the border in his first year with the Jays in 2026, as he went 11-6 with a 2.40 ERA (league-best 2.55 FIP) and 1.10 WHIP with a career-high 239 strikeouts and 78 walks in 169 innings across 29 starts in his eighth season in the majors. He now has six straight seasons with 200-plus strikeouts, making Cease an extremely attractive strikeout arm in fantasy baseball drafts next spring.

Jeremy Pena Not in Astros' Lineup on Wednesday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (wrist) is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game on the road against the division-rival Seattle Mariners, per MLB.com. Nick Allen is getting the start at shortstop and will hit ninth against Mariners right-hander George Kirby. Pena was pulled late in Tuesday's contest against the Mariners after he was hit by a pitch on his right wrist earlier in the game. Hopefully, he will be ready for the final series of the regular season this weekend in Sacramento.
