Andy's NHL power rankings for all 32 teams heading into Week 9 of 2025. Where does each NHL team stand in our latest power rankings for the 2025 season?
Week 8 of the NHL season is in the books, and the standings are taking shape, which means it's time to update our power rankings. The quarter mark of the season is behind us, and we have plenty of data to form our power rankings.
Given that the Thanksgiving break is over, the teams sitting in playoff spots will likely be in the heat of the playoff race in a few months. While there could be some surprise risers later in the winter, the playoff picture is finally beginning to take shape.
All statistics and team records mentioned are updated as of Monday, December 1. Let's dive in!
No. 32 - Nashville Predators
The Predators opened the week with a tough 8-3 loss to the Panthers, but were able to string together two straight victories in the middle of the week. On Wednesday, they took down the Red Wings in Detroit and then carried this momentum into Chicago, where they picked up another regulation victory.
However, their win streak wouldn't last long as they fell to the Jets on Saturday. This brings them to an 8-13-4 record, the worst in the entire league. They continue to hold the bottom spot on our list.
No. 31 - Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks entered Week 8 on a three-game losing streak and made little progress during Thanksgiving week. They were able to open with an upset victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday (5-4), but then regressed, falling to the Sharks in regulation on Friday and then to the Kings in overtime on Saturday evening.
They enter the start of the month with a 10-13-3 record, putting them just above the Predators and Flames in terms of points. Their 95 goals allowed are tied with the Oilers for the most in the league.
No. 30- Calgary Flames
The Flames continue their slump to begin the week. On Wednesday, they began their trip out East with a matchup against the surging Lightning. In this game, the Flames lost 5-1, with the lone goal coming from Joel Farabee. Then on Friday, they upset the Florida Panthers (5-3), with Farabee leading the way once again, scoring another goal and adding an assist.
On Sunday, they escaped with a loser point in their loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. They enter Week 9 carrying a 9-14-3 but have begun to make some progress over the last few weeks, carrying a 5-4-1 record (over their last 10).
No. 29 - Buffalo Sabres
After winning three of their last four, the Sabrs entered the week with some sneaky momentum. However, it was quickly stalled on Wednesday, when they fell to the Penguins in the Steel City. Then, on Black Friday, they dropped their second-straight game in regulation, this time to the New Jersey Devils (5-0).
However, the Sabres got a much-needed victory on Saturday evening, as they took down the red-hot Wild in a shootout. Despite their solid showing at the end of November, they enter the new week with the fewest points in the Eastern Conference.
No. 28 - St. Louis Blues
The Blues had a busy four-game week and slowly began to climb the standings. They opened Week 8 with a 3-2 victory over the slumping Rangers and escaped with a loser point against the Devils in New Jersey on Wednesday. They returned to St. Louis on the weekend, where they took down the Senators (4-3) and the Mammoth (1-0).
Since allowing five goals to the Flyers back on November 14, Canada's future No. 1 netminder in the Olympics, Jordan Binnington, has held a solid .914% SV% over his last four games.
No. 27 - Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs ended last week with a rough 5-2 loss to the Canadiens and were free-falling in the standings. While they did not make much progress this week, they picked up four of the six possible points (2-1 record), which helped them return to .500 to start Week 9.
They defeated the Blue Jackets in overtime on Wednesday and concluded their week with a dominant 7-2 victory over the Penguins in Western Pennsylvania. Their loss came at the hands of the Washington Capitals on Friday night.

No. 26 - Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets continue to fall in our rankings. After opening the season as one of the top teams in the sport, the absence of superstar netminder Connor Hellebuyck has deflated this club. This week, they had another losing record, falling to the Capitals and the Hurricanes in regulation.
However, they were able to close their week with a much-needed victory over the Predators on Saturday night. Over their last 10, they hold a modest 4-6 record.
No. 25 - Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks began to show signs of regression last week, and those results came true once again. They began their week with an overtime loss to the surging Wild on Wednesday evening. However, on Friday, they took a tough loss to the lowly Nashville Predators (4-3).
On Sunday, they were able to get back in the win column, taking down the Ducks by a score of 5-3. Over their last 10, they carry a modest 4-4-2 record, sitting with an overall 11-9-5 record.
No. 24 - Florida Panthers
The Panthers remain a difficult team to rank due to their inconsistencies. Once again, the Panthers showed flashes of their former selves this week, but also had some very underrated showings, which is why they still have a 12-11-1 record. This week, they began with a dominating 8-3 victory over the Predators but dropped their final two games to the Flyers and Flames.
Over their last 10, they have been the definition of mediocre, carrying a 5-5 record. Can Matthew Tkachuk's return spark this club?
No. 23 - Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers snapped their skid with a massive victory over the Panthers in a Stanley Cup Final rematch last weekend. However, their momentum was quickly halted as the dominant Dallas Stars took them down 8-3 on Tuesday evening. While they were able to rebound well, shutting out the Kraken (4-0) on Saturday night, they sit with an 11-10-5 record, putting them near the middle of the pack.
Goaltending remains a major issue for this club as Stuart Skinner enters Week 9 with a rough .885% SV% and a 3.00 GAA. They have succeeded despite the weakness in net before, but it may be too tough a task this season.
No. 22 - Utah Mammoth
The Mammoth have continued to trend downward following their impressive start. While they began the week showing similar flashes of previous dominance, taking down the Western power house, the Vegas Golden Knights, on Monday (5-1), they would then drop their next three games, all in regulation.
Over their last 10, they have posted a tough 3-4-3 record, which has caused them to take a stark drop in the Western standings.
No. 21 - Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets saw their losing streak extend to four games, but were able to escape with two loser points to stay afloat in a surprisingly competitive Metropolitan Division. They began their week with a regulation loss to the Washington Capitals but were able to take a point in their losses to the Leafs and the Penguins on Wednesday and Friday.
With top winger Kirill Marchenko on the shelf with an upper-body injury, the offense has seen a dip in production, scoring five goals in these three games.
No. 20 - San Jose Sharks
The Sharks took a step back this week, but given their strong start, they still sit just outside the top half of the rankings. This week, the Sharks went 1-2, with both losses coming in regulation. They began their week with a tough 6-0 loss to the high-powered Colorado Avalanche, but bounced back against the slumping Canucks on Friday.
However, the Golden Knights took them down by a 4-3 score on Saturday evening to stall any momentum. Their offense has continued to produce (scoring 74 goals), but their defense and goaltending remain major weaknesses, as they have allowed 84 goals.
No. 19 - New York Rangers
The Rangers had a rough trip out West last week and were one of the biggest fallers in our rankings. However, the Blue Shirts responded in a big way and showed that they can still contend in the Eastern Conference. Throughout four games this week, they picked up three victories, all in a row (against the Blues, Hurricanes, and Bruins).
However, the Lightning put an end to their win streak at MSG by a score of 4-1 on Saturday night. Igor Shesterkin remains the backbone of this team and once again sits near the top of the Vezina leaderboard, boasting a .921% SV% over his last four games.
No. 18 - Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings had some glaring metrics (like their goal differential) that suggested their record was a bit higher than what it should be. It appears this regression hit them in a big way this week, as they posted a 0-3-1 record. They took three straight regulation losses to begin their week, to the Devils, Predators, and Lightning, and concluded their week with a shootout loss to the Bruins.
After looking like the answer in the crease, Cam Talbot has played a big role in their recent skid, holding an .863% SV% over his last four outings.
No. 17 - Seattle Kraken
The Kraken entered the new week riding a three-game point streak, but quickly saw it come to an end this week. They began with a 3-2 loss to the Western heavyweight Dallas Stars (3-2) and then fell to the inconsistent Oilers (4-0) on Saturday evening. The Kraken are slated to begin Week 9 with a rematch against these same Oilers, this time in Western Canada.
They hold an 11-7-6 record, which keeps them in a Wild Card spot. As noted before, their defense and goaltending remain elite; their 59 goals scored is the lowest mark in the league. They are the only NHL team yet to score 60 goals this season, yet they still hold a playoff spot. If this team can find any spark on offense, they will all but secure a spot in the postseason.
No. 16 - Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens showed signs of life last week when they picked up a massive victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and were able to carry that momentum into Week 8. They continued to roll with a 4-3 victory over the Mammoth in Utah on Wednesday and then took down the Golden Knights in Las Vegas on Friday evening.
While their streak was cut short by the Avalanche (7-2) on Saturday, they picked up four massive points as they look to return to the top of the Atlantic Division. They entered week 9 with a 13-8-3 record and appear to be climbing out of their slump.
No. 15 - Ottawa Senators
While the Senators had an inconsistent week, they picked up a major victory, from a roster standpoint, by welcoming back superstar winger Brady Tkachuk from injury. They began their week with a tough loss to the Kings (2-1) but were able to earn a shootout victory over the Golden Knights on Wednesday night.
Following the Thanksgiving break, the Senators took a tough loss to the struggling Blues (4-3) and continued their slump on Sunday, as they fell 6-1 to the Stars in Dallas. They have a critical matchup against the Canadiens on Monday evening to open Week 9.
No. 14 - Boston Bruins
While their time in Western California ended with a disappointing 3-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks last Sunday, they quickly returned to form with a critical -1 victory over the Islanders on Wednesday evening. While they fell to the Rangers on Black Friday, they were able to finish their week with a shootout loss to the Red Wings.
Morgan Geekie continues to be the story of this club, as he enters Week 9 with an eye-catching 20 goals to his name. He is on pace to smash the 33-goal mark he posted last season.
No. 13 - New York Islanders
The Islanders took a bit of a step back this week, but still remain in the top half of our rankings. After a dominant stretch to end November, they opened the week with two straight losses but tallied a loser point in one of them (against the Flyers).
Then on Sunday, they fell to the red-hot Washington Capitals on their home ice, who have just won four straight games. In this loss, the Islanders got only one goal from Logan Thompson. This was the second time this week they scored just one goal in a game.
No. 12 - Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins were beginning to show some signs of concern, but were able to silence their critics, for the time being. They picked up two straight victories to open their week, over the Sabres and the Blue Jackets. In their victory over the Blue Jackets, they rallied down 3-1 in the third period to force overtime, in which they picked up their first overtime victory of the season.
While their week ended with a rough loss to the Maple Leafs (7-2), they have their sights set on a cross-town matchup against the rising Flyers on Monday evening.

No. 11 - Los Angeles Kings
After not finding themselves in the win column at all last week, the Kings quickly rebounded in a big way in Week 8. They opened with a critical 2-1 victory over the Senators. While they fell to the Ducks in a shootout loss on Friday, they took down the Canucks to conclude the week.
This brings them to a 12-6-7 record, good for the second-highest mark in the Pacific Division (only behind the Ducks). Adrian Kempe will need to find his shot for this team to push for the top seed in the division, as he has scored just two goals over his last 11 games.
No. 10 - Philadelphia Flyers
It's time to take the Flyers seriously. After taking a big jump in our rankings last week, the Flyers now sit inside the top-10 entering Week 9. While the team opened their week with a tough 3-0 loss to the red-hot Lightning, they were able to flip the script, picking up three-straight victories.
More importantly, these victories came against three Eastern Conference teams (Panthers, Islanders, and Devils), giving them a nice boost. Over their last 10, they hold a stellar 6-2-2 record. They open the new week with a massive matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
No. 9 - Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights welcomed back Mark Stone this week but had an inconsistent showing, going 1-2-1, but remain within the top-10 in our rankings. Their lone victory came against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday evening, which was their final game of the week.
Stone has wasted little time making an impact in his return, netting two goals and adding an assist during his first three games, post his wrist injury.
No. 8 - Washington Capitals
The Capitals have begun to right the ship and continue to climb our rankings this week. They began their week with two dominant victories before Thanksgiving, taking down the Blue Jackets (5-1) on Monday and the Jets (4-3) on Wednesday. Then, following their short break, they defeated the Maple Leafs on Friday evening.
On Sunday, they continued to stay hot, taking down the improving Islanders in Belmont, NY, by a score of 4-1. They are finally showing their dominance; they showed all throughout 2024.
No. 7 - Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks are legit contenders and continue to prove they belong in the Stanley Cup conversation. After winning three of their last four last week, the Ducks began the week with a tough 5-4 loss to the Canucks but quickly bounced back, taking down the Kings (5-4) in a shootout.
On Sunday, they took a surprising loss to the Chicago Blackhawks (5-3). They enter Week 9 with a 15-9-1 record with a +9 GD and continue to be one of the biggest surprises of the season.
No. 6 - New Jersey Devils
The Jack Hughes-less Devils continued to roll and sit near the top of the Eastern Conference at the start of December. This week, they started hot, picking up three straight victories, over the Red Wings, Blues and Sabres. However, they were unable to find a perfect 4-for-4 record as the Flyers took them down at The Rock on Saturday night.
Captain Nico Hischier has picked up much of the scoring slack, netting six goals (with five helpers) over his last seven contests.
No. 5 - Carolina Hurricanes
After falling to the Sabres to conclude last week, the Hurricanes saw their losing streak hit two games when they fell to the Rangers on their home ice on Wednesday evening. However, they rebounded very well on Black Friday, taking down the Jets by a 5-1 score.
To close out their week, the Hurricanes were able to take down the Calgary Flames by a 1-0 score in overtime. This brought them to an elite 15-7-2 with an eye-catching +15 GD, the fourth-highest in the sport.
No. 4 - Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning had a busy four-game slate this week and did not disappoint. The red-hot Lightning went a perfect 4-for-4, picking up all eight possible points as they continue to surge in the Eastern Conference. Their victories came against the Flyers, Flames, Red Wings, and the Rangers.
Left wing Brandon Hagel continues to remain one of the most under-the-radar scorers in the sport as he enters Week 9 with 15 goals and 12 points. He is currently riding an impressive five-game goal streak. During this stretch, Hagel has put eight pucks into the back of the net.
No. 3 - Minnesota Wild
The Wild were one of our biggest risers last week, and they did not slow down once again. They opened their week with a 4-3 overtime victory over the slumping Blackhawks and then picked up potentially their most impressive victory of the season, taking down the Avalanche in a shootout on Wednesday.
They concluded their week with a shootout loss to the Sabres. Over their last 10, they have held a near-perfect 8-0-2 record. Matt Boldy has continued to spark the offense, tallying 14 points (eight goals) over his last 10, while netminder Jesper Wallstedt looks like a budding superstar, posting an incredible 1.93 GAA and a .938% SV%.

No. 2- Dallas Stars
The Stars continued to establish themselves as the clear No. 2 on our list. They began their week with an impressive 8-3 victory over the Oilers on Tuesday and would take down the Kraken (3-2) on Wednesday. On Friday, they stayed hot, as they took down the Mammoth (4-3), extending their winning streak to three games.
To close out their week, the Stars continued to shine, as they took down the Senators in the Lone Star State by a commanding 6-1 score. Wyatt Johnston led the way in this contest, tallying a hat trick.
No. 1 - Colorado Avalanche
As you would expect, the Colorado Avalanche once again sits in the top spot. This week, they started out hot with a dominant 6-0 victory over the Sharks. While they fell to the surging Wild in a shootout on Friday, they rebounded in a big way on Saturday, dominating the Canadiens by a 7-2 score.
Nathan MacKinnon sits as the clear Hart Trophy favorite, holding 20 goals and 24 assists to his name through just 25 games played.
