New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes is expected to miss eight weeks after undergoing successful finger surgery on Saturday. On Thursday, Hughes cut his finger during a team dinner. The team plans to re-evaluate Hughes in six weeks. Losing Hughes is a major setback for the Metropolitan Division-leading Devils. He ranks first on the team with 10 goals and 20 points after 17 games. Dawson Mercer is set to center the second line until Hughes returns. His comeback likely won't happen before mid-January. Additionally, Hughes' absence will put more pressure on Nico Hischier to overcome his slump. Entering Saturday's game against the Washington Capitals, Hischier has finished scoreless five times in his last seven appearances.--Taavi Pailk
