Week 4 was a great week of football, and multiple backup running backs had solid performances. These RBs are now on the fantasy football radar, with many managers looking to pick them up off the waiver wire.
In this article, we will focus on Tyler Allgeier, Zavier Scott, and Brashard Smith. Allgeier shone alongside Bijan Robinson as the Falcons avenged their 2024 loss to the Commanders, while Smith impressed many Chiefs fans with his performance in their most impressive win of the year. The Vikings lost in Dublin to the Steelers, but Scott had the best performance of his career, as he caught a touchdown pass.
So, are Allgeier, Scott, and Smith worth adding off the waiver wire in Week 5? Here are the latest outlooks on each for fantasy football.

Tyler Allgeier Week 5 Waiver Wire Pickups

Despite a great rookie season, Allgeier was thrown to the side by the Falcons when they drafted Robinson in the 2023 NFL Draft.

This has obviously limited Allgeier's opportunities, but he's still a very solid handcuff option in fantasy football, especially in standard scoring formats. Allgeier ran for 51 yards and a touchdown in Atlanta's win against Washington in Week 4, finishing as last week's fantasy RB20 in standard formats.
Allgeier has always been a weak pass-catcher, but his all-around rushing game has been solid so far this season. Amongst the players with 40+ rushing attempts so far this season, Allgeier ranks in the top 16 in elusive rating (54.2), YAC per attempt (3.05), and breakaway percentage (32.9%), per PFF's stats.
He has been one of the most reliable handcuff RBs in fantasy football since Robinson got drafted and is also very durable, having just played in his 54th consecutive NFL game.
Zavier Scott Week 5 Waiver Wire Pickups

Aaron Jones Sr. and Jordan Mason were supposed to lead the Vikings' backfield together this season, and that's exactly how things started out in the first two weeks.

However, Jones suffered a hamstring injury and was placed on the injured reserve list. Over the last two weeks, Mason has been the lead RB, but while many expected the veteran Cam Akers to be the team's RB2, the UDFA Scott has surpassed Akers in Minnesota's depth chart.
Scott, who went undrafted in 2023, made his NFL debut in Week 2 on special teams, but he has been playing well on offense since Jones' injury. He has totaled 94 yards and a touchdown from scrimmage in the last two weeks, providing a nice spark for the Vikings' offense.
The WR-turned-RB is an intriguing option and has (at least) two games against the Browns and Eagles to prove he deserves a spot in Minnesota's RB rotation before Jones returns.
Brashard Smith Week 5 Waiver Wire Pickups

Despite a very slow start to the year, the Chiefs are now back on track after a statement win over the Ravens in Week 4. However, their running game is still a big issue.
Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt have struggled this year (especially Hunt), and Patrick Mahomes currently leads the team in rushing yards (130) and touchdowns (two). Not all hope is lost, though, as Smith impressed many Chiefs fans with his Week 4 performance.
Smith didn't have huge stats, as he recorded just 3.6 PPR fantasy points in the win against Baltimore. But his workload is increasing gradually, and his explosive ability has already injected some life into this offense.
"I know offensively, Nags [Matt Nagy] is just trying to increase Smith’s reps every week and putting him in positions where he can do some things," said Chiefs HC Andy Reid. "He seems to be handling it good."
This could be a repeat of the 2022 Chiefs situation, as they started the year with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon as their main RBs, before pivoting to seventh-round rookie Pacheco, who finished as the standard format RB12 after Week 12.
Now, this same thing can happen to Pacheco and Hunt, with a seventh-round rookie taking their touches.
