Emmanuel Clase, Luis L. Ortiz to Remain On Leave for Rest of Season
Emmanuel Clase and starter Luis L. Ortiz will remain on the restricted list and administrative leave for the rest of the season, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. Major League Baseball has been investigating both players for gambling for several weeks. Clase hasn't pitched since July 26, while Ortiz last took the mound on June 27. The Guardians cleared out both players' lockers on Aug. 1, so it's not surprising that they won't return this year. Depending on what MLB uncovers in its investigation, it's possible that neither will suit up in the majors again. Clase, a two-time American League Reliever of the Year, was amid another productive season before the league put him on the shelf. The 27-year-old pitched to a 3.23 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP, 47:12 K:BB, and 24 saves in 47 1/3 innings. Cade Smith has taken over as the Guardians' closer in Clase's absence. Ortiz, 26, made 16 starts and went 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 96:42 K:BB over 88 2/3 frames.
