LIV Golf Betting Picks - 2024 Greenbrier

The LIV Golf League will hold this week’s event at The Greenbrier in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. The Old White Course at The Greenbrier hosted a PGA Tour event, The Greenbrier Classic/ A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, from 2010 to 2019. The tournament was canceled in 2016 due to the flooding in West Virginia but resumed play in 2017. The Old White course has been consistently rated as one of the best courses in the state of West Virginia.

The Old White Course hosted a LIV event for the first time in 2023. The LIV Greenbrier event was won by Bryson DeChambeau, who stormed the field on Sunday with a historic round of 58. The event was won with a score of -23. Mito Pereira finished second, shooting -17, and Matthew Wolff, David Puig, and Richard Bland rounded out the top five for the week, shooting -16.

The event will be played Friday-Sunday and will air on the CW Network in 100% of U.S. markets, as well as the CW App and LIV Golf Plus. Globally, the event will be broadcast in over 160 international territories Live and On-Demand, free of charge, via LIV Golf Plus.

LIV Golf Greenbrier Course Breakdown

Below is the official round one scorecard provided by LIV Golf.

Hole 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Out
Par 4 4 3 4 4 4 4 3 4 34
Yardage 449 446 208 430 388 475 390 236 413 3435
Hole 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 In
Par 4 4 5 4 4 3 4 5 3 36
Yardage 354 484 570 496 395 175 507 615 170 3766

The Old White Course at The Greenbrier first opened for play in 1914, designed by Charles Blair MacDonald. The course was named after the Old White Hotel, which was on the grounds of the club from 1958 to 1922. The Old White Course was damaged in 2016 by a flood and was reopened and fully restored in 2017. The course will play as a 7,201-yard par-70 with bent grass greens, according to the official LIV round one scorecard.

In five of the nine years, a PGA Tour event was played at The Greenbrier, and the winner had a score of -16 or better. Stuart Appleby’s -22 winning score in 2010 was the lowest in tournament history. Joaquin Niemann missed the mark by one shot when he hoisted the trophy in 2019, winning at -21. While the course should be a fun viewing experience for fans, it will not be an overly difficult test for the players.

The 2023 LIV Greenbrier event was won by Bryson DeChambeau with a score of -23 in just three rounds. Four other players, as mentioned above, also shot better than -16. When you take into account the number of rounds, these scores are significantly lower than the PGA Tour winning scores we saw throughout the history of the event at this course. While I don't expect anyone to reach -23 again, I do expect a winning score in the high teens. This event is a bona fide birdie fest. Bryson DeChambeau made 27 birdies in 54 holes here last year, which is almost unfathomable.

The fairways are easy to hit, and the course is not overly long, which can turn it into a bit of a wedge and putting fest. This week I am not looking at any kind of accuracy or Green in Regulation statistics. Quite frankly, hitting fairways isn't important; Mito Pereira was the only top-5 finisher at the end of the week who ranked inside the top twelve in fairway percentage on the week. David Puig finished T3 and hit just 57% of fairways, 39th on the week. Green in Regulation percentage is almost a non-factor as well. Bryson birdied 50% of his holes on the week. It isn't about hitting greens; it is about giving yourself a good look at Birdie.

The two statistics that I will be solely focused on this week are putting and birdies. Bryson, Wolff, Puig, and Bland all finished the week in the top five in putting average. Mito Pereira was the only top-5 finisher to rank outside the top five in putting percentage, and even he finished inside the top ten. If players aren't making putts this week, they stand no chance to win.

LIV Golf Betting Strategy & Selections - Greenbrier

This week, I am coming up with a slightly different strategy. I am only going to start out with two outright bets, one being an extreme longshot and one bet in the placement market. I believe the players currently listed at the top of the board will have some decent live odds after round one. Given the fact that this is a birdie fest, someone could come out the gates hot and shoot a first-round 61. With birdies available on pretty much every hole, this leaves plenty of time for a top player to storm back in the final two rounds and still win. The guy I have my eye on in this group is Joaquin Niemann. He is currently listed at +800, but if he reaches double digits at any point live, I will be ready to pounce.

Matthew Wolff +2900 (FanDuel)

It may finally be Matthew Wolff's time. Wolff hasn't won an event since July of 2019 and has detailed his struggles with mental health since. However, he is currently playing some of the best golf we have seen him play in years. Wolff has finished T17 or better in each of his last four starts, including a sixth-place finish last time he teed it up at LIV Golf UK. His move to the RangeGoats in the offseason has him in a much better head space and the results are following. Wolff is currently in 16th place in the season-long LIV individual player standings.

Wolff finished T3 at LIV Greenbrier in 2023. He finished the week inside the top-5 in putting and made 19 total birdies, second most in the field, only behind Bryson DeChambeau. While Wolff can be erratic and inconsistent at times, nobody can deny that he is a birdie maker who can run as hot as anyone. The 25-year-old has ranked inside the top 14 in total birdies in five of LIV's last seven events. Last start at LIV UK, Wolff finished T5 in total birdies. He also ranks third on the season in total eagles. The kid has a serious ability to go low but has been plagued with occasional blow-up holes. He shouldn't have to worry about that this week at Greenbrier.

Bubba Watson +32000 (FanDuel)

This is a bomb on someone who knows the course better than anyone in the field. Bubba Watson and his wife purchased land at the Greenbrier in 2012 and were living there in 2016 when the area was hit by massive floods. There was a state of emergency in 22 counties in West Virginia, and the area was in shambles. Bubba and his wife donated $250,000 in the aftermath of the flood for recovery aid. Watson often talks about the special place in his heart that the Greenbrier holds. Just two events ago, we saw Sergio bring home an emotional victory at home in Spain. Can Bubba replicate the same this week?

It will be an uphill battle for Watson in terms of current form. The 45-year-old hasn't shown much of anything over the past two years. However, anyone who has followed Watson's career knows that form isn't all that important to the veteran. There are certain courses that are just "Bubba tracks". He can show up and play well out of nowhere. What is more of a "Bubba track" than a place he called home for years? While he has never won at the Greenbrier, he did make this a regular stop on his PGA Tour rotation. In six starts, he made six cuts and finished inside the top 16 three times. Last year he finished T29 at the LIV Greenbrier event.

At 320-1, I believe there is enough there to take a stab at this one.

Anthony Kim to finish inside the top 20: +1200 (FanDuel)

Anthony Kim shook the golf world with his return to golf back in March. Since returning, he's yet to put together a full tournament with respectable results. However, if you look closely enough, there have been some signs that things are turning around. For starters, Kim played his final two rounds of LIV Golf UK at -2 and even par. The winner of the event was only 13-under par. Kim playing his final two rounds at two-under is actually pretty impressive. In the tournament prior in Andalucia, Kim was inside the top 10 on day two before imploding with a final round 82.

In the last two tournaments, there have been four strong rounds from AK and two disaster rounds, which derailed his entire tournament. My hope this week at Greenbrier is that there isn't a whole lot of room for disaster. Kim has been griding daily on his game, and in his words, he is working harder than he has ever worked before. His putting has been getting consistently stronger, 30th at Nashville, 19th at Andalucia, and 15th last start in the UK. With consistent improvements and not a lot of room for disaster, this may very well be the week Anthony Kim puts up a solid finish. I don't anticipate him in the mix on Sunday by any means, but I could see a T18 result happening.
