2022 Masters - PGA DFS Overview

The Course: Augusta National Golf Club

Par 72 - 7,510 Yards, Greens: Bent, Designed By: Bobby Jones & Alister Mackenzie

The brainchild of the legendary Bobby Jones, in concert with Alister Mackenzie, Augusta National was built on a 365-acre property that had been Fruitland Nurseries. Jones imparted all his wisdom on the layout that would eventually become the most famous golf course in the world. The condition of the course is IMMACULATE, with not as much as a young azalea out of place.

Augusta National is a Par 72 that has now been stretched out to over 7,500 yards, thanks to some yardage that was added to holes No. 11 & No. 14 this year. The legendary layout tests every facet of a player's game. Distance off the tee is a huge advantage at Augusta National, as it is crucial for players to take advantage of the four Par-5s. Precision on approach shots with your irons, creativity with your short game, and the possession of nerves of steel on the lightning-fast greens are also needed. Piece of cake, right?

Perhaps nearly as important as being able to actually hit the shots, is knowing what type of shots to hit and where to hit them. Course experience isn't an absolute must to play well at Augusta, but we see time and again how big of an asset course knowledge and experience can be in the Masters. Perhaps more than any other course we see on the schedule, this layout is full of nuances and subtleties that even the best players in the world must learn in order to succeed. The preferred ball flight is right-to-left (a draw for right-handed players) off the tee and a high cut on approach shots into the greens. Golfers must also be able to handle the drastic undulations and slopes, as they will rarely be faced with a shot from a flat lie. While there is obviously more than one way to skin a cat, we've seen players that can hit those shots repeatedly succeed over the years.

Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for FanDuel (PGA DFS)

We have tons of great weekly PGA articles, DFS analysis, tools and DFS advice. Be sure to read our other fantastic articles regarding this week's event including DFS lineup picks for DraftKings/FanDuel, betting advice and DFS prop picks.

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Justin Thomas ($11,900)

Perhaps the best pure shotmaker in the game, JT heads to Augusta with his game firing on all cylinders. If you're a DFS regular, you probably already know the deal with JT...the ball-striking is consistently elite, but the putter can run hot and cold. That's once again been the case this year, as he's gained strokes on Approach in all six of his 2022 starts, but has lost strokes putting in half of those appearances. At the risk of oversimplifying things, I'm confident that JT's ball-striking will be in sharp form this week, with the only thing standing between him and a green jacket being his performance on the greens.

Cameron Smith ($11,200)

With an impressive win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and a life-changing victory at The Players Championship, 2022 has been a true breakout year for Cameron Smith. His recent success makes his sterling Masters track record shine even brighter. In just five career appearances at Augusta National, he's already recorded a pair of top-fives and a T10. The course is tailor-made for Smith's game, as Augusta allows him room for error off the tee (his biggest weakness) while allowing his creativity and world-class short game the opportunity to shine. Outside of his obvious short-game wizardry, the mulleted one is sneaky-great on Par-5s. He grades out fourth in this field in SG: Par-5s over the last 50 rounds, an area that offers perhaps the clearest path to success at Augusta National.

Brooks Koepka ($10,900)

After spending an extended period battling injuries - including in last year's Masters - Brooks Koepka finished 2021 strong by recording top-six results in the year's last three major championships. We can take his results in "regular" PGA Tour events with a grain of salt, but he has appeared a bit more motivated in his 2022 starts and has gained over five strokes T2G in three of his appearances this year. As for Augusta National, it's a nice fit. Before his missed cut in last year's edition - which we can chalk up to him not being fully healthy - Koepka had played the weekend in all five of his career starts in the Masters, with four top-25s and a runner-up in 2019 standing as the highlight.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Will Zalatoris ($10,300)

The 25-year-old was already well known among those in the PGA DFS community when he scored a runner-up finish in his Masters debut last year, but his Cinderella run made him a household name across America. After running out of gas down the stretch last year, "Willie Z" has appeared rejuvenated in 2022, narrowly missing his first PGA Tour win at Torrey Pines when he came up short in a sudden-death playoff against Luke List. His ball-striking has remained consistently phenomenal in his subsequent starts and he's gained an average of 6.9 strokes T2G over his last five. The elephant in the room is a putting stroke that falls somewhere between unorthodox and cringe-inducing. It's obviously a concern, but this is an event that has been won by the likes of Hideki Matsuyama and Sergio Garcia in recent years, so it is an issue that he can overcome.

Shane Lowry ($9,900)

Coming up just short of a victory at the Honda Classic, Shane Lowry has put together a strong 2022 that includes top-13 results at both The Players and the Valspar. In fact, over the last 12 rounds the Irishman grades out first in this week's Masters field in SG: Total, while also ranking inside the top-three in SG: T2G & Ball Striking. Learning the ropes at Augusta National has been a process for him, but Lowry has now scored top-25s in each of his last two Masters appearances. The current form blows us away and he appears to be adjusting nicely to the nuances of Augusta.

Tony Finau ($9,600)

Many Finau fans hoped for the "floodgates" to open after his long-awaited victory in the Northern Trust late last season, but Big Tony has actually been going in the opposite direction this year, with his lone top-25 coming in the limited-field Sentry Tournament of Champions in January. It's not difficult to pinpoint the source of his struggles, as prior to the Valero Texas Open he'd lost strokes both on and around the green in four straight. While there are form concerns, Finau has been excellent at Augusta National, with a top-five and a pair of top-10s across his four career Masters starts. Capable of handling Augusta National's lengthy Par-4s and capitalizing on the Par-5s, he possesses a skill set that not every golfer has. I view this as an interesting buy-low spot that comes with some serious GPP leverage as an added bonus.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Corey Conners ($9,300)

We're certainly not going to sneak up on anyone with Corey Conners, as I expect the Canadian to be one of the most popular options on this Masters slate. However, it's with reason, as Conners packs a lot of bang for the buck. After a sluggish start to the year, it appears he has recaptured the elite ball-striking form that we all know and love over the past month. The Canadian grades out sixth in this week's elite field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 50 rounds. He made a semi-final run in the Dell Match Play on the heels of positive outings at both the API and The Players. In addition to the recent spike in form, Conners has gone T10-T8 in his last two Masters starts. A sensible value play.

Russell Henley ($9,000)

Playing some of the best golf of his career, Henley has hung tough since dropping a heartbreaker to Hideki Matsuyama at the Sony Open to start the year. The Georgia Bulldog has gained strokes T2G in every start of 2022 with four top-15 finishes in addition to the aforementioned runner-up result at Waialae. His most recent stroke-play start at The Players was especially impressive, as he actually led the field in SG: Approach (+11.5) for the week.  He hasn't made the drive down Magnolia Lane since 2018 but has recorded top-25s in each of his last three Masters starts. His actual win equity is questionable, but Henley's a legitimate dark horse top-10 candidate this week and perhaps my favorite salary saver on the board.

Si Woo Kim ($8,500)

Si Woo Kim is undoubtedly volatile but possesses an upside that many around this price point simply don't have. The South Korean sat just three shots off the Masters lead through 36-holes last year before ultimately settling for a T12, which marked his third top-25 in his last four trips to Augusta National. Winning the Players Championship at just 21-years-old should tell you what type of talent he possesses, and while it is anyone's guess if he can put them all together again, he has all the tools needed to contend in this event. A T13 at Valero last week was just the latest in a stretch of solid, if unspectacular, outings. A WD at The Players aside, Kim has gained strokes T2G in every one of his starts this year.
