Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 2:
Nico Collins, Houston Texans
Houston Texans Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins (hamstring) is not practicing on Wednesday after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring injury, a league source told Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Sports. It is the least severe hamstring injury that Collins could have, but it does not mean he will play in the Week 2 contest this Sunday against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.
The 27-year-old is the Texans' undisputed top wideout, so if he is forced to miss this weekend's game, it will make things a lot more difficult for quarterback C.J. Stroud in a game that could feature plenty of points. Collins sitting out on Sunday would elevate Kayshon Boutte, Jaylin Noel, and Xavier Hutchinson into starting three-wide sets in Houston.
Collins got his season off to a strong start in the Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills, catching seven of his 10 targets for 75 yards and his first touchdown of the year, but fantasy managers might be without him against Cincy. Given this trajectory, managers should have an alternate plan in the event he does not suit up.
Caleb Douglas, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Caleb Douglas backed up a strong summer with five catches on seven targets for a team-high 94 yards in Sunday's 27-13 loss to Las Vegas. The third-round rookie was hardly a part-time surprise, either. He played 51 of Miami's 56 offensive snaps, a 91% share, after earning a starting job before the opener. ESPN reported this week that Douglas' debut confirmed what it had been hearing about how much he had impressed people inside the Dolphins' building.
That matches what Jeff Hafley was saying in August, when he called Douglas one of Miami's most consistent players in camp. Week 1 gave fantasy managers something tangible to pair with that praise. Douglas led all NFL rookies in receptions, receiving yards and yards after the catch, and he did it while barely leaving the field. The role was already there. Now the production is too.
Douglas' fantasy stock is moving quickly after one game because the opener made the summer buzz look a lot more believable. He profiles as a viable WR3 heading into Week 2.
Ladd McConkey, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey (ribs) did not practice Wednesday, according to Alex Insdorf. McConkey is still considered day-to-day after getting hurt during Sunday's loss to Arizona, when he caught five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown before leaving in the third quarter. Earlier reporting indicated the injury was not believed to be significant, but sitting out the first practice of Week 2 leaves his availability against Las Vegas unsettled.
McConkey and Quentin Johnston remain the Chargers' starting receivers, with Tre' Harris among the options behind them. Los Angeles is already without Keandre Lambert-Smith, who landed on injured reserve Tuesday. There is still plenty of time for McConkey to get back on the field before Sunday, so Wednesday's absence alone isn't reason to panic.
His status approaching Friday should give fantasy managers a much better idea of whether he can play in Week 2.
Adonai Mitchell, New York Jets
New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell had a highly efficient day in his team's Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans, hauling in all three of his targets for 60 receiving yards. While Mitchell's target volume might be a bit underwhelming, it's worth noting that Jets quarterback Geno Smith attempted only 24 passes in a game where New York held a double-digit lead for most of the second half.
Jets rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. (ankle) may also be set to miss time with a sprained ankle, which could lead to Mitchell and star Jets wideout Garrett Wilson seeing a highly concentrated target share going forward.
Mitchell has been an explosive player so far in his career, averaging 14 yards per reception through his first 34 NFL games. If he continues to play a prominent role in the Jets passing game, he could be a breakout candidate worth targeting on deeper-league waiver wires. Mitchell has entered FLEX consideration in deeper 3-WR formats for Week 2.
Zay Flowers, Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers (hamstring) was not seen during the media accessible portion of Thursday's practice after logging a DNP on Wednesday. Flowers had one of the most impressive performances of Week 1, posting a career-high 150 receiving yards on only 11 routes run, but he exited at the end of the first half with a hamstring injury after missing time near the end of training camp with a similar issue.
The Ravens placed rookie wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane (wrist) on injured reserve earlier this week with a wrist injury, and with Flowers looking doubtful for Week 2 against the Saints, veteran Rashod Bateman could be forced into the number one wide receiver spot. Rookie Elijah Sarratt is also expected to make his NFL debut after being a healthy scratch in Week 1.
