Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football waiver wire outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider adding off waivers in Week 2:
Jalen Coker, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker posted a huge day on the field during the Week 1 matchup against the Chicago Bears. The third-year wideout hauled in a 51-yard score in the second quarter. Coker found the end zone again with an eight-yard score in the fourth quarter.
The 24-year-old hauled in eight of his nine targets for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. There are probably not too many people out there who had Jalen Coker dropping two TDs and nearly 150 yards on their bingo cards. Coker emerged as the favorite option of quarterback Bryce Young on Sunday. The two of them clearly have great chemistry, which could lead to a breakout campaign for Coker.
After that game, Coker is going to be one of the most popular names on the waiver wire. He should be a solid flex option for the Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Devaughn Vele, New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Devaughn Vele caught seven of nine targets for 69 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions. Saints quarterback Tyler Shough found Vele for a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter to cut the lead to 21-14. Vele lined up as the Saints WR2 behind Chris Olave and was second on the team in receptions, receiving yards, and targets.
His longest catch of the day was a 31-yard reception, which led to a Saints field goal. The 28-year-old will see an uptick in snaps and targets in the short term with rookie Jordyn Tyson (hamstring) on injured reserve. Vele logged 82 snaps, had 58 routes run, and had a good rapport with Shough in Sunday's loss.
With Tyson injured, Vele carved himself out a role and could become a key part of the Saints' offense along with Olave, Juwan Johnson, and Travis Etienne Jr. Vele is RotoBaller's No. 3-ranked waiver wire pickup and will look to build on Sunday's performance against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2.
Kendre Miller, New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller rushed for 30 yards on nine rushing attempts and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions. Miller logged the Saints' first touchdown with an eight-yard score to cut the lead to 21-7. Surprisingly, the 24-year-old was heavily used in the running back rotation and even vultured starter Travis Etienne Jr.'s touchdown.
Miller and Etienne both had nine rushing attempts on Sunday. Etienne was more efficient on the ground, averaging 5.1 yards per carry compared to Miller's 3.3. Still, Miller's usage is puzzling since the Saints signed Etienne to a four-year, $52 million contract this offseason. Miller wasn't targeted, but did log 26 snaps and six routes run in the Week 1 loss.
Fantasy managers searching for help at running back can look to add Miller as he's widely available and only rostered in 1% of Fantasy Yahoo leagues. He's a desperation FLEX at best in a road matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2.
Rashod Bateman, Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman was held without a target in Week 1's 41-23 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Despite the lack of production, Bateman remained a key part of the offense, playing 53 of 68 snaps (78%) and leading the team in routes run (27). Bateman could see a significant increase in volume in the next few weeks, given injuries to Zay Flowers (hamstring) and Ja'Kobi Lane (wrist).
The Ravens offense looked prolific in Week 1, and with the New Orleans Saints on the schedule in Week 2, Bateman could have an opportunity to produce with Flowers and Lane uncertain to play. Fantasy managers should consider adding Bateman, as he could serve as the lead receiver for star quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Kaelon Black, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers running back Kaelon Black should be a priority waiver wire target for managers in 12+ team leagues. Black rushed for 65 yards on 14 carries in Week 1, and he also caught one pass for five receiving yards. This was one of the first times during Christian McCaffrey's stint with the 49ers that we saw a backup handle 10+ touches, even though McCaffrey was active.
There are a few factors to consider here. First, McCaffrey was returning from an undisclosed injury, so maybe he wasn't 100 percent and the 49ers wanted to use Black to keep him fresh. Second, the 49ers won by 20 points, so it makes a little more sense to integrate the depth players once the game gets out of hand. Still, this was a fascinating development for the 49ers and their rookie running back.
At worst, Black is a bench handcuff who would jump to the RB2 tier if McCaffrey gets hurt. At best, Black can have weekly RB3/flex value of his own.
