Steven Matz Perfect Over Three Innings
5 years agoNew York Mets starting pitcher Steven Matz retired all nine Washington Nationals batters he faced on Saturday in Grapefruit League action. Matz struck out three in his three perfect innings of work. Despite the excellent outing, the competition for the Mets fifth rotation spot between Matz and Michael Wacha remains muddled. Both Matz and Wacha have had very solid springs. Matz currently has a 1.50 ERA in six innings pitched and Wacha has a 1.17 ERA in 7 2/3 innings pitched. If Matz wins the final rotation spot, he is certainly worth a selection in deep mixed leagues and in NL-only formats. If, however, the Mets opt to go with Wacha or decide to use Matz as a middle relief pitcher, his fantasy value takes a huge hit. A lot will depend on what both Matz and Wacha show us in the final two weeks of spring training, and whether the other Mets starters remain healthy.
